Title: Iowan here.
Post by: reddog on June 07, 2009, 10:58:32 AM

I live in the Iowa Great Lakes region and spent most of my life  working residential construction.  6 years ago, I started a small kitchen and bath retail store, and havent looked back. Shouldve done it many years sooner.  I do small remodeling jobs and high end kitchen remodeling.

Being my own boss (one horse operation) allows me to follow my hobbies when the work is done.

Been married for 32 years, and have one daughter who recently graduated from college.  We live on a small ten acre acreage and are in the middle of remodeling the house, and restoring 5 acres of native prairie grasses and forbs.

Ive owned a Humminbird 997 since March of 08, and cannot tell you the enjoyment it has brought into the boat, let alone fish.

I used to have severe  envy of those large screens from the other brand.... but not anymore!

My hobby seasons start out in Thanksgiving, when I take the boat out to our fishing cabin in Chamberlain South Dakota. This is the view from the deck:

We fish walleyes below the dam at Ft Thompson  from Nov-March:(http://photos.imageevent.com/okoboji_images/huntingandfishing/websize/P1010019.JPG)

And then switch to Lake Sharpe and fish Smallmouths:

Needless to say, its colder than heck at that time, but theres not much pressure! ;D

Somewhere in May, We tansfer from fishing to racing.  We go to several tracks each week and our preference is Sprint cars:(http://photos.imageevent.com/okoboji_images/jasoneckard/Picture%20002.jpg) which amount to  Go Karts on steriods.

Racing season ends about the time hunting season starts. I mostly pursue pheasants (http://photos.imageevent.com/okoboji_images/huntingandfishing/websize/IMG_6573.JPG)and deer(http://photos.imageevent.com/okoboji_images/huntingandfishing/websize/P1010137.JPG)

with a few predators mixed in. (http://photos.imageevent.com/okoboji_images/huntingandfishing/websize/P1010038.JPG)

and that leads me back to Thanksgiving, when I go fishing again.  Its a  viscous cycle. ;D

Most of my pictures are  stored online here:   http://imageevent.com/okoboji_images. (http://imageevent.com/okoboji_images.) Feel free to look around, but be sure to check out the Humminbird album.

Reddog,

Welcome to the forum.  I just had my first trip to ND back in November 2008.  It was amazing.  We went Deer and Pheasant hunting for a week.  It snowed the whole time and never got above 8 deg with lows in the -20's.  We had a blast!

Hi Reddog and welcome to the gang.
Nice pictures of a beautyfull landscape and big fishes!
I never got something big like this when I was fishing here in Lake Constance. The biggest one I got was a Pike that was about 60 cm in length. When diving, I get lucky sometimes and see a bigger one, but since spear fishing isn't allowed here, I just watch them and have my fun doing so.

Regards from Germany
Harry

Hey ya Reddog and welcome to the forum.  Both of my parent’s families are from Iowa and I still have a Brother and few Sisters up that way in the Mason City and Atlantic city areas.  Nice to visit during the summer but really don’t think I could take living up there in the winter.  It was fun while I was a little kid but as soon as I could push a snow shovel it wasn’t so fun anymore!

Greg,   If you ever get up this way, the smallmouth fishing on West Okoboji is excellent in July and August.  Look me up, I live half a mile from West Okoboji.

I know Atlantic well. These are from down around Grant, just south of Atlantic.
