My new 898c si should be delivered tomorrow. I should be able to get my boat out of storage in a week or so after more snow melts. Just wondering on placement. I have read that the motor will need to be raised enough so not to disturb the beam. How far over from the motor would be a good location. Thanks for any input.[attachment=1]

for your boat you might try not more than 1/2 way from dead center. There is a lot of posting on locations and you may have to try or experiment. with the deep v you might not have as much issues as other shallow draft boats. check thru the forum gallery and see what others have done. Also check the forum for transducer location previous posts. There is a search tab at the top right of the home screen to help in searching. Most issues with transducer seems to be at speed above trolling speed. Chuck

With a deep-vee hull I would go over even less than what Chuck said; try no farther than 1/4 of the distance from the motor to the side of the transom. This will put the transducer farther down in the water which will help with it being an aluminum boat hull. From that picture showing the 20HP motor hanging off the back I don’t think that you will have any high-speed depth readings issues.

Thanks for the info guys. The 20hp motor is the largest hp allowed in the lakes in my area. ::) I still need 2 feet of snow to melt and 12inches of ice before I can give her a try after I get it mounted. Now that I got my unit I can't wait to give it a try. ;D

How did the above location work out for you?
I have a deep V also but w/a 50 hp Merc and a right console steering wheel. Am I going to be able to get high speed readings?
I'm going to be pairing a 898 HD SI w/a 55 lb Terrova I-Link, I am looking forward to much less controlling of the TM and more time fishing w/my two boys :)

Ok, I'll take a shot:

Unknown until you test it. :-[
Every boat/motor combination/equipment/weight distribution is different.
If your transducer lifts up too far out of the water, YOU WILL NOT
get good high speed readings. If it stays deep enough, YOU WILL
PROBABLY get good high speed readings.
The best thing to do is to get a transducer mounting plate and secure that
to your transom in the general area where you want to mount the transducer.
You only have to drill two holes to install the plate.
Then, experiment with time on the water, moving the transducder.
It may take awhile to find the very best spot.

Alright, Thanks for the input.
From what I've been reading it looks like a delicate ballance between getting you transducer free from any obstructions/propeller turbulance and keeping it out of harms way. Where I bring my boat often, the Hudson River, has a ton of debris in it. You can be cruising up river see what looks like a 6" chunk of tree bark and you go by steering clear, observe the piece and it's a F'n 8' log!!

That's bad.
I hear that lowering the transducer will give better
high speed readings, but then the transducer is
more vulnerable to hitting something.
I fish the Potomac river some, and it too gets a lot of
floating debris. I heard that a guy hit a freaking floating
dumpster. Damaged his lower unit and his fiberglass boat.

I'm in the same position as others with the transducer well below the bottom of the hull.
It's just a matter of time before I whack something. POOF! $240. GONE.
Wish this poster would follow up on how he's making out with his idea.
May try be build something similar in the spring.
