Topic: 598ci si hd, high speed operation?

I have a 598ci si he combo on the way, it will be here today or tomorrow, it will be going on an 18' nitro with a 115hp motor on it . My question is will out work while I'm running down the lake, I've heard both ways.
If anyone can has any information I would greatly appreciate it.

It should work, but the question is
at what speed will it stop working.

You won't know until you try.
Once you figure out approximately where
you want to mount the transducer,
get a transducer mounting plate.
That way you only have to drill two holes in your
transom, or if you have a jack plate, you may
use that.
Every boat and set-up is different.
It's going to take trial and error to find the
sweetest spot ON YOUR BOAT for the transducer.

Really powerful motors lift the transom up.
If the transducer is lifted completely out of the water,
then it can't possibly work.

A guy I was talking to at the lake this weekend said something about having to get a second transducer,is there any truth to that?

The most common workaround for difficult transom setups is to install a "shoot thru hull" xducer for high speed 2d readings using a Y cable to allow the HDSI xducer to be mounted a little higher on the transom for protection against damage from floating debris...

This setup allows 2d readings from the "hull mounted" XP 9 20 xducer while also allowing SI and TEMP to come from the HDSI xducer...

I really appreciate all the advice y'all are giving me, I'm new to all of this
The boat has a thru hull 2d-ducer in out now, after I bought the boat I found that it had a bad spot in the ducer cable close to the console.
Should I replace it and upgrade to a newer ducer or would it be better to repair the cable?

First, there are two different types of transducers that shoot through or are through the hull.
A shoot through the hull transducer is glued on top of the hull and the beams actually go through the hull, and return through the hull.
There is also a through the hull transducer, where there is a hole in your boat that
the transducer sits in (marine adhesive is probably used around it to prevent leaks).  This type must be installed correctly or your boat could sink.

First: Determine what type of transducer you already have, shoot through the hull or through the hull.
Secondly: Is this compatible with your Humminbird unit?
If not, you may be able to get an adapter cable for it.

Thirdly: Is the existing transducer cable damaged enough so that it
won't work anymore.  You may have to test it to find out.

If it were me, I think I would first try and see if the existing transducer will
work with my unit, then go from there.
If you do have a through the hull transducer, and it needs replacing, you may
want to let a professional do it, because the slightest leak could end up being
life threatening.

I'm not sure if it's easy to repair a transducer cable or not.  I have no experience doing so. Some have a type of shield/aluminum type coating.  Hopefully, someone else could chime in and help you with that.

It is a shoot through the hull type and its a humminbird, but it is damaged bad enough that it will not work, it will come on but that's all, and your right about the aluminum shield.
I'd say I would be better off to just get a new one, it will probably save me a lot of hassle, and I'll know exactly what I have.

FYI:I've heard that when installing the shoot through the hull
transducers, it's extremely important to avoid getting air
bubbles between the transducer and hull.

Well I guess I did alright, I mounted it on the step behind the transom. took the boat to lake Malone yesterday evening and it worked great, I didn't open it all the way up but it worked at 50mph
The only time it cut out was when I took a turn a little sharp and i lost my depth reading for a little bit,
I went ahead and ordered the shoot through hull ducer and the y splitter cable Wednesday so I guess I'll be hooking that up this evening.
For the shoot through hull ducer I've been told to put water in the bottom of the boat in order to keep air from getting  between the ducer and the hull i bought some marine epoxy that will set up under water, anyone have any helpful tips?

The water inside the hull is for testing the location of the transducer before you start mixing up any epoxy.  If you ordered the XP-9-20 transducer it will come with its won epoxy.

Tips:
#1 tip is to test the location prior to mixing the epoxy!  This means actual on the water testing has to be done to help ensure that the placement is 100%.
Make sure it is at least 70 degrees where you are going to mix and let the epoxy cure.
Give at least 24 hours to for the epoxy to cure.
Sand any coatings off of the area you want to use as an installation location and before testing occurs. .
Place a sandbag (plastic bag with sand, dirt or gravel in it) on top of the transducer to hold it in place both during testing and when the epoxy is curing.
