Unit wont turn off.....998SI
« on: November 24, 2012, 05:41:49 PM »
I'm having problems with my 998SI 13 months old, good power at terminals (12/12.5) wired to battery.....what it's doing is it wont turn off just goes to the "shutting down" screen and sits there until the screen goes white. I'm pretty sure I joined the Humminbird Select program so I should have another year of warranty left but I had a question about the bootstrap way to get it out of the loop.   Also the way I have to turn the unit off is to unplug it then plug it back in. The unit comes on without me using/pressing the power button so I think if a bad power button or board.    Also anyone else see or heard of this happen?

There have been issues with the power switch. Also it can be abused.  Contact customer support and theyu can help with the problem, check on the select support and get the unit in for checkup or repair..

If you are not running the newest software on your machine,
then, as a last resort, you could install it.

Also, once, my power button was sticking.
I took a plastic toothpick (do not use wood because it could break off),
and went around the perimeter of the button.
There was some debris in there which I removed.
The button was free then.

Thanks for the input....I do have the unit update with newest software just did it about a month ago.  Might try the button thing seems like that might be if because the button is now very sensitive because I noticed if I barley touch the power then starts to shutdown.  Dont know if its the board or the button.......

Had a similar problem with my 998 after having it about 6 months. Kept getting worse after that. Ended up calling Support and sending my unit back for repair under warranty. They had to replace the keypad. Call them; it may need a similar repair.
