Navionics sd Card question
« on: October 07, 2010, 06:47:29 PM »
I have the Navionics 09 south card in my 798. How can I go to a lake map without actually being on it. For instance I live in the Houston area and I want to pull up Lake Sam Rayburn. How can I do this or do I have to be on that lake. I'm going up there and while there I want to mark some areas. When I get home I want to pull up those cordinates and share with a friend.
Thanks for any help
EJohnson

- Turn the unit on.
- Wait for gps lock on current position.
- Go to "flat" gps screen.
- Zoom out until you can see area you want to go to.
- Move cursor to the lake you want.
- Zoom in.
- Zoom in, zoom out, cursor to examine specific areas.

Note: You map setting must be "auto" or map card.

I did that before posting and thought there had to be a better way. That is rather time consuming. I guess I'll have to live with it. Maybe HB will have an update someday to make it more user friendly.

johnson56, every GPS unit made has to be operated like that to view someplace you are not. Don't expect any update to change that procedure from any mfg.

Wayne P is correct.
I purchased the Navionics® HotMaps® Platinum Multi-Dimensional Lake Maps for Oklahoma and Texas areas.
I currently live in CA and will be relocating to OK in the near future.  I view the lake maps I want on either my 1197 or on NavPlanner.
NavPlanner is easier to use but you do have to be careful not to corrupt the card, the warranty is void if corrupted.
Once you get use to using the system it gets easier.

Don't want to sound stupid but what is Navplanner?

Navplanner is GPS mapping software--do a Google search for it.

FuzzyGrub,  I tried the directions you gave while my Navionics card was in my unit & the boat out of the water.  Didn't work!!  What did I possibly do wrong??

jerry b,
Did your 898 show you in the proper location on the map (at your house I presume)?
Is the lake you were looking for on the Navionics map card?

Jerry,

Outside of Greg's comments, not sure what differences a 898 would have over my 798ci.  My 798ci is the older one with Unimap, not ContourXD base maps.   But, wouldn't think there would be much or any difference.   I think the map card setting is by default set to "auto", but might want to check yours.

Greg,  yes the lake is on the Nav. card  Previously when I spoke with Nav. Tech, they told me to set the 898 on simulator & it would load the maps on the unit.  It did not!  I had Nav. exchange the card I had & the new card will not load the maps either.

FuzzyGrub,  while in the boat at the garage, the "flat" GPS screen would just move when I zoomed out but no lake maps appeared.

Guys, I'm lost on how to proced from here!

When I zoom out I see the outlines of the lakes, both Unimap and Navionics.  After moving the cursor to the lake of interest, as you zoom in, at a certain point, the depth lines appear in the Navionics lakes.   I have my unit on a portable case currently, so will check this evening to make sure I didn't miss a step.

If I understand your latest post, the lakes don't appear even if you are located on them?

jerry b,
Go to the GPS Diagnostic View and see if the unit is showing the map card (should show this in one of the lower right side boxes).  It may be that the unit is not reading or recognizing the map card at all.

Have you tried both memory card slots in your Humminbird?

When you install the map card with the unit running do you get a “loading” message in the upper right corner of the display?

I would check the Chart Select menu setting as FuzzyGrub suggested.  The “Auto” setting should work but it won’t hurt to try the proper setting for where the map card is installed either.

Is there anyone you know that runs a Humminbird unit that you can try the same map card in?

BTW: the map card should show its information whether you are in the normal operating mode or one of the simulated modes.

YES we're half way there.  FuzzyGrub, I finally got the lakes on the screen with waypoints indicated.  But there never was any depth lines to appear, only the lake outline.

When I'm on the water, the lake DOES appear with deptgh lines.

Greg,  The GPS map car was recogonized as NGA91.  One of U'r Techs. told me that was OK previously.

The 2nd slot (right) will not accept the card & I didn't try to force it.  What could be wrong?

When I install the card, it DOES NOT give a 'loading' message & never has in auto or simulator.

Currently I do not have another unit in which to try the card, but will maybe soon.

Did you turn the card over. There are 2 differents ways to put it in the slot. One way won't let you the other will.

Check the Chart Select menu and set it to the memory card slot that you are using the map card in.  The lake should show the same whether you are actually there or not.  Just make sure that are looking at it with the same zoom level in both instances.

If the map card will not go into the right card slot it could be that the card reader has become damaged.  These things have little springs in them that break sometimes.  Call the Humminbird Customer resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 to get it fixed while it is still under warranty or at least to get the problem logged in our system now so you can send it in later.

Thanks Johnson56 & Greg..I was able to get the card into the other slot!  Greg why does HB make it so hard?  It should be just a put & play!

jerry b,
The card reader may have become misaligned somehow.  We seen this occasionally.
