Hello I can't shut my brand new 898 off.... Please help....
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:36:58 PM »
Hello There

I am brand new to this site and I am just getting started into the side imaging game. I have just installed a brand new 898 in my boat. I went out with it for the first time today and I can't get the thing to turn off with the power button? Am i missing something? The unit has 4 hours on it now Please help. Thanks,

Tom

Are you holding down the button?  You have to hold it down for about three seconds.

Hey There

yeah thats the obvious solution. I can hold the button for more than a minute and nothing happens. I don't have any issues powering down my other humminbird. any suggestions? Thanks,

Tom

Sorry! Had to make sure!

When you press it does it do anything?  Does the brightness/color menu come up?  Does it start to count down?

Cut off the power source, Disconnect the battery if necessary. After 1 min reconnect the pwr. I believe there is a Reset all defaults by holding down the menu and power button together when powering up. (CHECK your manual as I'm not sure for your unit. I have 798c) Try that after disconnecting the battery or what ever power source you have connected to it.

Yeah, I'm an electronics geek.  ;D

After reading agin I found the spell checker.   :P

Thanks for the replies. I have cut the power off to the unit for more than an hour. it starts up fine and works properly when its running. I just can't seem to power it off with the on/off button. I push and hold.... Just like my other unit.... and nothing happens at all. Is there a way to reset the unit? I was searching around on here looking. I know there has to be a simple solution. I have to say that the manual doesn't cover anything like this at all. There is lots of information in the manual just nothing for troubleshooting. Thanks for everyones help! Sorry for all the newb questions! :)

Sounds like your to the point for getting the reset information or sending it back to HB for service.
Thanks

If its a mechanical issue, i.e. the button is broken or the membrane is not contacting the pcb correctly, you will most likely have to send it back.  However, its possible it is a software related issue.

What version software do you have installed on your unit?

Hello I tried it out today and I got the on/off working????? The software version is 4.830. I can tell you all one thing for sure..... I will NEVER be without side/down imaging again. What an awesome piece of equipment. I'm finding that all of my notions about reading 2D sonar were wrong in many cases from today. I hit my favorite lake trout lake today and we did AWESOME! Thanks again to all the replies! Here is to side imaging! Cheers,

Tom

Hello Again

I have fished with the unit for about 10 hours now and I love its capabilities I'm still having trouble with the on/off button. I did get it to work properly once.... It powers up fine with the on button but It now won't shut off again. I tried updating it to the newest version for my unit which is 4.88 and this made no difference. now when it comes to the start up menu if I arrow down to the status of the unit and then over to view status it just freezes up and I can't get it to do anything. If I just let it power up and select normal it works fine but I still can't shut it off.... Any suggestions? I don't think that its a hardware problem because once its running it functions fine. Thanks Fellas!

Not much I can suggest.  If the update did not fix it, I would be calling HB and seeing how fast they will fix or send me a replacement.

Will the unit power up and back off if you disconnect the transducer?
If so, than the problem could be that something has grounded to the transducer’s cable.

Hello

I never thought to check the unit without the transducer connected to it. This is a really funny problem because on a very slight occasion the unit will power down using the on/off button. I called the HB service center today in canada and they asked me to send it in to them. It left my hands today so I can't test your theory with my unit. My tournament partner has a 997si I'll try his head unit on my boat to see if that could be the issue. what are you thinking> possible screw or something through the cable that is causing it to ground? The way that I have the ducer cable run I can't see that being the issue I'll pull it apart to be sure once I try my buddy's unit out. The thing that sucks is have a walleye tournament coming in two weeks. I hope that the HB service center is FAST!!!

Hey All

My partner and I spent the whole day on the river yesterday with his 997si connected to my running gear and there were no issues at all except the transducer kicked up once while on plane going upstream in the river. I have adjusted that and will be out again today. I hope that the service center is fast so that I can get my unit back quickly.

One thing I did notice is that my unit updates the GPS depth contour maps faster than the 997 does. is there a reason for this?

Just returned from a weekend on the lake and have to say that the same happened to me.  This is only the 2nd time I have used my new 898.  I was changing some settings and I noticed everything on the screen "locked up".  I could not turn the unit off.  I then decided I would un-screw the cable collector cover and and I unpluged all connections.  That seems to have worked.  She started right up and had no further problem.

Takman74,
Your 898 has a faster chip-set in it than does the 997 unit allowing to display the data from the larger mapping cards faster.

Deltaden,
I think you have a different problem as yours locked-up while Takman’s operated fine but would just not turn off.  I would look at all of the electrical connections between your unit and the battery it is powered off of.  A loose or dirty connection may not allow enough current to flow through it causing the unit to lock up.

Hello There

I received an update via email on my unit today from the repair center in Winnipeg Mb. They have diagnosed the board as being the issue. They have the part on order from HB and will advise me when they get it. I have to say the email from them was a very nice touch.... I was also very impressed that after only one day they sent an email with the problem and described the solution that they were going to take to fix it for me.... SPOT ON Humminbird!

Deltaden- My unit locked up on me because I did the update to it and then never did the restore factory defaults thing after the update installed. Like in the video that Rgecy posted on youtube. I did the restore thing and then it functioned fine..... Other than the board not working correctly. The service center should have that corrected for me right away...
