Title: old epoxy?
Post by: shorty35 on April 26, 2016, 11:29:29 AM: I just bought a new Helix 9 si. I'm in the process of trying to install it. I have the shoot thru transducer to get on plane reading. I have already knocked out my old transducer. What do you use to get all of that old epoxy off the bottom? I have tried everything!!! Also, when I knocked the old transducer out it seems to have taken a little of the fiberglass with it. Is this a problem?

Post by: fishreed on April 26, 2016, 12:23:35 PM: You will probably have to sand it off with a Dremel tool or a hand grinder with sandpaper. Epoxy residue is tough to remove without an abrasive.

Post by: sonar2000 on April 27, 2016, 08:39:47 AM: I checked with a boat rebuilder and he agrees with Fishreed. Grinder sander but with caution. Take your time and grind in little bits.

How smooth does the bottom have to be? Meaning... I have it pretty smooth and flat, but there are some ( not sure what word to use) indentions in the bottom. Will this be a problem or will the epoxy go ahead and fill those up?

Post by: sonar2000 on April 27, 2016, 09:55:55 AM: The epoxy will fill up the cracks. Just don't overdo it. Take your time. Neatness is 99% of the job. Heck, take some pictures and post them for us to see.. Might help someone else in the future..

Put a bag of sand or similar on the xducer and put enough water in the bilge to cover the xducer and test on the water ...

It think that could be classified under the "measure twice cut once" philosophy. I firmly beleive that when you are trying to find a good place for a transom mounted transducer, a portable clamp on transducer holder is great way to find the good "spot" before your start drilling and screwing on your boat's transom.
