Title: 997 transducer help
Post by: spanky1 on January 03, 2014, 10:34:54 PM
Hello everyone,

I’m new to the forum and have read some very helpful and informative posts. Since it is -2 here in CT I figure I might as well think about boating since it will be quite some time till I’m actually on one.

I recently purchased a used 997c si with a transom mount transducer. It is replacing a 931c with a single beam transducer on a 16’ Maritime Skiff used in saltwater on Long Island Sound. The bottoms of these boats are smooth and the existing transducer reads bottom at 30+mph.
I have a few questions I hope you can answer for me;
1)   Can the 997 use the existing single beam transducer (from the 931) for when I’m on plane and then use a splitter and install the si transducer elsewhere for idle speeds?
2)   If not, should I install the si transducer where I have the existing transducer since it seemed to operate well at speed?
3)   If I’ve missed again, where is the best location for the si transducer?

Here are some pics of the existing transducer location, it’s relation to the bottom of the hull and it’s proximity to the motor.

Thank you
Frank

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums spanky1.

1) Yes.  The single beam transducer you show in your picture appears to be an XNT-9-20 transducer.  Please look for a label or printed markings on the cable to confirm this.

2) It could but there are no guarantees that the HDSi transducer would work as well at high speeds versus the one you have installed now.  It is usually harder to find a mounting location for the larger HDSi transducer to work at high boat speeds.

3) I would install the HDSi transducer on the port side of the motor (this is based on you using the existing transducer and an AS-Si-DB-Y cable) so that the existing transducer does not block as much Si sonar.  The HDSi transducer would not have to be mounted at the bottom of the transom and can be mounted upwards a little bit to help protect it from being damaged.

Now, take your cold weather back – we shouldn’t be below freezing all day long here in the south!

Thanks for the welcome as well as the great info Greg.

The 931 transducer package is label: XHS 9 20 TK    710179-2   200KHZ    050221.

If this transducer will work I will definitely use the AS-Si-DB-Y cable and add the HDSI transducer to the port side as you suggested.

I wish I could take the weather back, at least we are used to it. 45 degrees yesterday and is all the way back down to 10 degrees today (-8 windchill). I can't wait for spring!

Thanks again,
Frank

Doh!  My mind is slipping some more… that is an XHS type housing on that transducer… The XHS-9-20-T is basically the same transducer as the present XNT-9-20-T just is a different housing.  It will work at both the 200kHz and 83kHz frequencies and will work with the AS-Si-DB-Y cable and your 997 unit.

Wow, we’ve made it all the way up to 27 degrees here in the balmy south.  Don’t think that we will quite make it to the 32 degree temp the weatherman stated this morning.  At least it will be out of here after tomorrow though!

Thanks again Greg.

Great news that the XHS transducer will work on the 997. Now all I need is weather that won't make my fingers fall off and I can do the install of the SI transducer! For me that should be sometime in April!!!!! :-\

Again, great forum and thank you for all your help.
