Title: Best angle of approach for SI of different types of structure
Post by: steelebob on December 11, 2013, 11:29:41 AM
Somewhere I read that if you what to observe a certain type of structure, it might have be a ridge line (but please don't restrict your answers to just this type of structure, I'm a newbie) the shadow created by the angle of the boat to the structure, reveals the best information.

It won't be the angle of the boat. it will be the angle of the transducer relative to the area scanned. Depth plays a most important part in the image.  The angle of the transducer is viewed in two ways. 1) The angle from the surface to the object. 2) the angle of view across the object. Scanning a length cone vs a side cone will produce different images.
Depth will make big differences in the cone.

Steelebob, yes, I get what you are saying.  Some objects will show better if you scan them from a certain angle.  That's why anytime I find a target of interest I will make passes from different directions to get the best image.  I will even vary the distance from the target to change the vertical angle from the transducer.

The shadow of the target can reveal more about the target shape then the sonar return itself!

Hope that helps.

Thanx, Robert. I was hoping there were some hard and fast "rules" for certain types of structure.
