Title: Lithium batteries
Post by: Crestliner16 on April 27, 2021, 02:45:41 AM
I'm considering going to lithium batteries. I have a 16 foot aluminum  boat, nothing fancy. I have a 24 volt 80# Terrova and using two 31 group wet cells. These are dedicated to the TM. Are lithium batteries that much better? Any input is appreciated.

The 2 biggest advantages I’ve read is weight reduction and more usable power (they run at full power until they shut off vs a wet cell that slows down over the run time  ...

Disadvantages are cost and not every charger will work with lithium  ...

Crestliner,

I have a 1648 (16') Tracker and recently had to upgrade my AGMs.  They were Optima Blue top D34.
I run a outboard jet and weight was the main reason for switching to Lithium.  Saved 50lbs.
This is what I am running from 2 batteries:
24v trolling motor Minn Kota Terrova 80lb
Started a 40hp outboard motor
Powered electronic Humminbird Helix 9 Gen3
Some LED navigation lights

I only have 5 trips on the lithium setup so far I do not have much data.  So far I am happy with them.
It does worry me that lithium's will run and just shut off like Rickie described.  I went with similar sized lithiums, 50AHs, & should have gone with the next size up for peace of mind.

But they are so light.  I was able to pick one up like palming a basketball.

I'm running 2 50AH lithium batteries in a 24v configuration for the trolling motor.  I couldn't put a single 24v due to the layout of my boat.

I heard it's not a good idea to run your electronics (fish finders) from a battery used for your starting motor.  Can anyone back me up on this?

can cause interefence/noise   on the graph when hooked up on same battery

These batteries only operate the Terrova. I have a separate battery for my electronics.
Thanks for the tip. Every little thing helps.

I don't have enough time using them to provide a full evaluation, but I ran them on my 24v 80lb Minn Kota for 2 hours straight on 4-5 speed and the battery test indicator on motor had 3 out of 4 bars.

I think that is fairly accurate. I have the same setup only using lead acid batteries. I tend run pretty fast at times, and we usually fish at least eight hours. I was using 31 group Walmart batteries.  For the money I believe I get a good three years or more. Since one was broken I'm needing new batteries.

I went with 2 Chargex 12v 50AH lithium batteries.
Had to get a new charger and went with NOCO Genius GENPRO10X2.
