1198 depth reading problems
« on: May 10, 2015, 01:50:31 PM »
Having trouble getting depth readings at idle and at WOT.  Usually just shows .6'.  I am currently running an 1198 at consol linked with a 999 up front.  I have the splitter on the 1198 running to standard 2d transducer shoot through and the HD transducer on transom.

You could be getting electrical interference.
That can affect the depth reading.
Go to an area with known depths and shut off everything except your sonar.
Drift around and see if the depth reads OK.
If it does, then it's electrical interference.

Secondly: with your boat in the water and fully loaded, your transducer
should be more or less even/level.

In addition to what ITGEEK mentioned ...

You might try disconnecting the AS SIDB Y cable and plug the HDSI directly into the head unit ...

If the depth issue is fixed ... The AS SIDB Y cable is bad, the shoot thru xducer is bad, or the shoot thru installation has failed ...

If the depth issue is still present with only the HDSI connected ... The head unit may need to be sent to HB ...

Make sure you have the proper 2D transducer selected on the network. Bob

Finally got a chance to get back on the water this weekend.  After a more thorough test I found that anytime I reach deep water...say 20'+...I'll loose signal on my 2d and on down image and depth along with it.  What I don't get is I never loose side image.  The linked 999 up front never looses anything.  I checked all the connections at y-splitter, at unit and battery (which is new) and all are good.  Any ideas?

Did you do as Rickie suggested? If you don't find out if your "Y" cable shoot through connection is good you can't diagnose your problem. A crappy transducer signal through the hull  or bad "Y" cable will cause exactly what you describe. You say you loose your 2d signal do you mean the digital reading or the image of the bottom you have on your screen? Your down image and SI both come from the same source. Where is the bow units transducer that keeps working? Maybe start with resetting to default values to eliminate the possibility of settings causing your problems.

Copy...I'll reset defaults and disconnect splitter next time I'm on the water....the loss of 2d is in depth and sonar reading on screen.  This all happens simultaneously with the drop of down image.  The bow unit transducer is located on the trolling motor.

Another option might be selecting the transducer from the bow for the console unit for diagnosis but first find out if your shoot through is the curprit or not. A guess of a puck jarred loose or gone bad is my bet. Bob

Question...2d transducer was installed with clear silicone.  Could that affect readings?

Yes, that stuff absorbs the sound. Very bad idea but easy to remove and epoxy it back down. SLOW CURE EPOXY only. Bob
