is it possible to modify the unit to view the side scan while recording?

You can view the sanning while the unit is recording.
Just start recording, exit the recording menu en then view the si view.
It says recording in the upper side of the screen.

Beware to use fast SD cards. With slower cards the view won't move anymore.

Thanks for that it did seem pointless if you could not have you tried the sdhc cards or ultra?

It woudn't work wit standard 128MB SD.
Now I use extremeiii 8 Gb
