998c si combo question
« on: April 01, 2012, 11:03:21 PM »
I just purchased a 998c SI Combo and a 788c HD DI Combo (figured it was time to lose those old black and white lowrance units).

When I power up the 788, the built in maps display as I would expect, but when I power up the 998, no maps are displayed.  The gps gets a signal and the coordinates are correct, but its all just a white background.  I think the message at the top of the display is something like "Loading Charts".    Did I miss something?   I kinda expected the build it maps to just work.   I did upgrade both units to the latest software from the Humminbird site.

Now, once that gets resolved and I install these units in the boat, I'm planning on connecting them via the ethernet.  So, when I purchase the Lakemaster Humminbird chip, will both units be able to display the maps or will I need to have a chip in both units?

Any help would be appreciated.  I tried reading/searching back through older posts looking for answers so sorry if these are repetitive.

Chip in each.  That data doesn't go across the Ethernet.  I just have a chip at the console myself.  I don't need the high end map up front.

wolfs4evr is correct in that you will still need a mapping card in each unit to be able to see the map card data on each unit.  This does not get shared or transferred when using the Ethernet connection cable.

For your 998 not showing the internal maps: call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks and they should be able to get it straightened out for you.

Another wish list...

With ethernet would it not be nice to share a map card.

Or I guess this would decrease map card sales. but a nice function anyway..

spoke with the service folks earlier this afternoon and they want me to ship the unit to them as they could not determine what was wrong.
so I called the store I purchased it from and their going to exchange it rather than me sending a new unit in for service
thanx for the responses

It is nice to see stores standing behind their sales.

I would buy those folks a cup of coffee when you take it in for exchange.

By the way.  Who is the store.

Remember that the original question was not displaying built in maps not a map card..

Hmmm, I thought that this could be fixed by sending you a file to load into your 998 unit.  Perhaps I was wrong about this or maybe the person you spoke to did not know this...

Besides the internal maps not being displayed, it also seemed to have issues with the SD card.  While it properly read the card when I loaded the new system upgrade (to 6.180), it would not read the card's waypoint data (even tho that same card, which I created with the HumminbirdPC app, loaded just fine on the 788).  The guys at Gander took a closer look at the unit and couldn't figure it out either.  One of the local HUmminbird sponsored guys just happened to be in the store too so he also took a look to no avail.  In the end, they swapped out the unit for a good one and my faith in customer service is once again restored.

One odd thing I found that I showed them was that when I turned the unit on and went to the system info page, it showed 18hrs of use, even tho was a brand new unit.

I appreciate the feedback and Im sure Ill have other questions as I tackle the waypoint management software.

With some of the units running the 6.180 software it is necessary to install the SD card with waypoints into the unit after it is already running.

The 18 hours of use was probably from the normal burn-in period that the units go through or was from some additional Quality Audit testing.

some units in the past have gone out without resetting the burnin time.

Thge good side of this is it shows that the unit had some bench test time before packaging and shipping. So at the very minimum it should function right out of the box..,
