Good information ..... we can easily get into the mode of thinking our units show us exactly what is down there.  Things like the "dead zone" can cause bottom contours or fish to be missed ..... I have found that if you want a better look at what is on a drop you are better off moving up and down the drop instead of continuously parallel to it when scanning.

    I agree with you. We missed a whole boat one time by going parallel to the drop instead of in and out.

Using the sonar for search and recovery of a body has been proven that it makes a big difference in which direction the target is scanned. I teach sonar scan for the teams to run a path and then run a 90 degree path.  It will make a difference...

      We have experienced the same thing on more that one occasion.  Scan N/S-- nothing.  Same area E/W and where did that come from? LOL!

      You are exactly correct.  The area hasn't been scanned unless we have made passes from different directions.
