Title: SD Card Slot issue on 898
Post by: WeekendHOOKER on May 28, 2012, 07:27:39 PM
First off Hello to everyone here....

I have just purchased a 898c SI Unit and have added a Navionics Platinum chip and SD Card to my arsenal for saving pictures/waypoints. Problem I'm having is that my unit seems to only read off the Navionics Chip when its installed in the right slot farthest from the screen. With the SD Card in the left slot at the same time it will not recognize the SD Card and asks if I want to save the waypoint to the Navionics Chip. I then switch the cards and lose all Navionics Function. I'm thinking that my left card slot is not operational....? Any known issues?

Welcome, Try formatting the SD Card and reinstall it.

I have allways installed the NAV card in the left slot and the SD Card in the right slot.
Try it and let us know the outcome.

Good luck and enjoy!

Ill try it....but the book says that either slot should work/read the Navionics or SD. Thanks....

You might check the card lock tab on the card. I have had this get stuck in the middle and cause some funny writing issues..

Also,
On your Chart menu, set chart select to auto.
That way, the system can figure out where the map card is.
It may be hard coded now to "Right Chart Card".

Yesterday I went out with a new HB unit and used a new 8 gb San Disk card that I had, and could not record on it, took out the card from my other unit and it recorded ok, so the issue was the 8 gb card.

I reformatted the card to Fat32 format and the card now works.  This is a mini card with an adapter.

:(... No such luck! The graph is set to auto for charts. I install the Navionics into the right slot and it recognizes it. With the 8GB SD Card in the left slot it will not give the option of a left card (Not recognizing it)..... The left card slot allows the SD card to seat deeper into the reader?????? I think something internal is broke???? When I install the Navionics into the left slot it will not recognize it and with the SD card in the right slot at the same time it will only give me the option of Auto on the reader choice..... Not seeing either???? Man this really erks me. How does Humminbird do warranty work as far as shipping goes???

Call Humminbird customer service and tell them you need to send your unit
back.
Ask them for a pre-paid shipping lable.  It shouldn't cost you anything
to send the unit to them.

Did you ask them for a label?
Sometimes you have to ask for that.

Sometimes it is great sometimes it is not so good. depends on the service rep.
sometimes you might have to ask for a manager or supervisor..

Be persistent but be considerate and nice.

HB deals iwth a lot of issues. some with product problems and some with customer induced problems.

You have to understand too, that the fishing season is
in full bore now.
Bass fisherman who have problems with their units, and have a tournament
coming up, will be persistant to get their stuff fixed quick.

I'm sure HB customer service is very, very busy right now.

No... Humminbird couldn't afford it. $55.00 for insurance and proper padding in the box. Good Lord UPS is pricey!!! If the turnaround time is 4 days like stated then ill be happy with it. $1500.00 for a unit and the first time I try to use the 2 SD Card slots it craps.....not a warm fuzzy!

I would 1. call and 2. send email.
HB is pretty good with this but things can get misplaced in the repair take apart and reassembly.
Definately have a conversation. Best is to follow that up with email as a document of the call..
dont wait. do it now..

Lockdown. Good Point.
I wonder if some of the issues with nav and maps could be the card is not seating good and the bouncing of the boat causes the card to detach and then reattach thus causing a reload of information. I think the map display is paged from the card and not loaded all the way...
You might be on to somnething here..

What does not worry mean? are they going to absorb the cost and fix or are you not to worry about the problem..

I was having issues with my 898 "Turned out direct rewiring to the battery solved that prob" and sent it in b/4 warranty ran out and low and behold my map card was in it. Thankfully it came back right where I left it. And sense it was in late winter I didn't notice until the unit came back:)

Sorry... The HB REP said for me Not to worry about leaving my Navionics Chip in the Unit. He would make sure it got sent back. Fingers are crossed!

WH...I think you may be ok.  Unless someone has a bad day you will most likely see you cards back. They are pretty good about taking care of what is sent in..

;D ... Just to let everyone know I did get my unit back and both cards were installed. The unit is working fine now and is allowing me to take snap shots and video. I did notice that on my SI screen after the update was done to my unit the only read outs I can get on my SI-ONLY screen is the water depth and temp...? Any ideas? I noticed this right off the bat when I used my graph for the first time after I got it back. I have tried to go into the menu section and turn ON the functions that I wanted but they will not show. I now have to scroll back to a regular 2D Sonar or GPS page to get my speed so that I can set my sroll speed right......  :P

You can select what's shown on each screen.
If the software version has changed on your unit, it probably wiped out
your custom settings.

Under your set-up menu, go to select readouts.

The problem is that when you put a card into the slot reader and try to close the card reader's door the cards can pop back out under the door.  This is probably why you were not seeing the card on the unit.  Sometimes you have to be very careful closing the door so at not to have the door touch the card while closing the door.  If you barely touch the card with the door it can pop out again.

I've had this problem almost every time I open up the card readers door and try to put the door back on an lock it shut.  So be careful and know that if your cards not working or not showing up it's probably not pushed in all the way.  Open the door and make sure the card is seated again and then carefully reclose the door again.  Keep repeating this until you card is recognized.
And the SI only showing two data sets is do to changes in the software. They probably updated to the new 4.180  software for you.  There is a menu item that will allow you to see more of the left side of the SI screen by only showing two data items on the left side of the screen.  I'm not sure which menu that's on but you can find it if you look around. Or Perhaps someone else can chime in here and tell you where it's located on the menu.  Probaby under the Sonar Tab somewhere

That would be the SI Readouts menu Moose1am.  Set it to “On” if you want to see more than just the water depth and temperature.
