998c SI Power Chip Vs HDS-8 Power Chip
« on: December 19, 2010, 09:45:49 PM »
Hi,
My 998c SI specifies 8000W Peak-To-Peak power output.  I see that the equivalent HDS-8 specifies 30,000W Peak-To-Peak power output!  Does this make the HDS-8 a very much more powerful unit and thus support HDS owner claims that it is a better (higher resolution) 2D, SI and DI sonar?

Frank,
A higher power transmitter does not equal higher resolution (I am assuming “sonar resolution” here).  What it means is that the higher the transmitter power the loader the transmit pulse that the unit sends into the water will be.

This is not an ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison though.  The 8,000 watts in the Humminbird is only when using the 1KW (50kHz) transducer and I believe is measured at that same 50kHz 2D frequency.  I don’t know how the other company measures their transmit pulse but it could have something to do with their broadband sonar as well.
