surface clutter
« on: March 31, 2014, 04:52:27 PM »
Can anyone tell me what surface clutter actually is.  I am under the assumption that the higher the setpoint the less objects and color will be on the display.   Unfortunately in my case I was fishing grenada this weekend and the only way to get all the clutter off my 2d display was to take the level to 0 and it cleared up.  Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Here ya go ...(the surface clutter filter is actually backward of what you would think it is)...

Hey Rickie,
That may be printed wrong.
I thought the higher the setting, the more the filter was applied.

Hey Greg,
Could you check that out please.

That is printed correctly ITG.

The lower the setting number, the less surface clutter (more filtering) will be shown.
I guess it depends on which way you think about it: the amount of surface clutter being shown versus the amount of filtering being done.

Basically surface clutter is all the little bitty stuff near the surface that reflects sonar.

Was your unit in "clear mode" or "max mode"? Using "clear" may help.

I just set upper range at 3 ft to eliminate most clutter.  You don't see much area on 2d at that depth anyway.

I encountered something pretty neat concerning surface clutter(if surface clutter can be cool)...

I have a 798 SI unit,, and I noticed tons of clutter,, just solid clutter in the water column... This was in open water,, about 20 foot,,.. Went across the lake,,, into a cove to escape the wind,,,  clutter was gone.. The screen looked as great as ever...  Went into another cove with wind and choppy water,,,, clutter again..
My theory??? We are in the middle of the pine pollen assault,,, and there is so much on the water,, I think the first foot or so of water is just nasty full of pine pollen that it was causing some rejection... The coves where it worked normally,, they were protected from the wind,, and they didn't have the pollen suspended in the water...

Sorry to hijack the thread,, but anyone else ever have this situation? Sound plausible??

Absolutely possible...I've seen my SI so cluttered it was unreadable from pollen...

I'm sure it can affect the 2d image as well...

Algae blooms will do it as well as aerated water from wind/wave action and/or rain.
