Title: 596c HD DI with ice transducer
Post by: bright on January 04, 2013, 09:20:30 PM
Had to replace 798ci HD SI unit as it got stolen and decided to get 596c HD DI. Since I already had ice transducer and it worked fine on 798 I just tried to get it hooked up and got an error message saying  "transducer not connected". As far as i remember I had to change sonar type to Universal sonar on 798 to get it working properly, but I could not see this option on 596. Can't seem to find anything in the manual except the fact that ice transducer is indeed an optional accessory.  any help would be appreciated..

That manual was written for both DI model and non-DI model units.  The ice transducer was meant for the non-DI units.  I hope you didn’t do it but trying to use the Ice transducer alone with your 596c HD DI unit could cause internal damage to the DI circuitry within the unit.  Of course the unit has to be transmitting to do this (running in the normal operating mode) and if all you got was the “Transducer Not Connected” message it never got to that point.

Your best bet (in my opinion…) is to just use the DI transducer on some sort of rig for ice fishing.  It has 2D sonar and you will have your selection of a narrower or wider 2D sonar to use versus the 200kHz sonar that you would have gotten if you could use an ice transducer.

Greg,

Wow! That was indeed an unexpected response. As a customer, I find a fact that connecting transducer, clearly listed as compatible in the manual that is shipped with the unit, could in fact damage it, very alarming.

Bright, I agree, if in fact this is true then the manual needs revision and a warning sent to all who purchased.
I for one would be unhappy if following directions fried my unit.

We mean the transducer XI 9 20 ?

The model  596 HD  DI does not support it. The manual  are often errors. Check through the site. More accurate information.

both transducers actually work fine with this unit. the only thing required to have it XI 9/20 hooked up is to manually select normal mode of operation during initial startup.  "transducer not connected" message I was getting is actually related to the fact that XI 9/20 does not have a temp sensor, which seems to somehow talk back to the unit during initialization. as for compatibility chart on the web page, I wouldn't rely on it as 798 SI, which I was using with this transducer for well over 3 years is not even listed there.

The temperature sensor is not to blame. Frequency transducer and 596c HD DI winter coincide only at the frequency of 200 kHz. So you think it's working. But on the 798 SI model, these frequencies are the same (200 kHz and 83 kHz)
So no problems with the work. The site is actually a bug that no model 798 for that transducer.

I guess you might have a point. Is there a real difference between this and non HD units hardware wise? I wonder if downgrading firmware (for non HD) would allow me to use both frequencies (83/200).

The modified firmware does not exist. Moreover it is not recommended to reflash the device another firmware. Fraught with failure of the unit.

Понятно что не рекомендуется. железо то одинаковое или нет?

Possible. I advise you to quit the idea of modifying the unit. I have not seen good examples.

Is this the right translation?
It is clear that it is not recommended. iron is the same or not

Got it, thanks.

Apologies, Chuck. Was just trying to clarify an answer to the question I posted earlier.

No problem, we have translators to help with posts.
You are ok.
