Title: Humviewer Locks up Loading 998c SI Recordings
Post by: okiedokie on January 23, 2013, 01:19:47 PM
I have been unable to get Humviewer to open recordings made on my 998c SI. Humviewer freezes at about 45% loading one of the B000 files. Original problem was on a 25 minute recording but on next trip out made shorter 3 minute recordings and still had problem playing back in Humviewer. I know Humviewer is a third party software but have gotten good use from it on recordings made with a previously owned 797c2 SI that I still have on my computer and Humviewer still opens correctly. The 998C SI is at version 6.570 and Humviewer is at its most current version. The recordings have been properly stopped on the 998C and can be successfully played back on the 998c. The 998C recordings also have been successfully translated with SON2XTF on my computer and the image files are viewable on DeepView and SI View. Just can't open them with Humviewer and make use of  all of the convenient features and functions that I have come to like about Humviewer. Review of possibly related postings has not offered up a solution to this problem. Although not a major problem with my enjoyment of the 998c SI, any ideas or suggestions as to why Humviewer locks up when loading my 998c recordings would be appreciated.

HB changed the recoding file somehow in v6.57 and now none of the 3rd party stuff works with it.

I'm not presently using the 6.5? Version in my 1197

But I'm curious....

The OP stated Humviewer would not load the  B0000 file...

If I remember correctly the B0000 file is the 83kHz frequency...

Also (if I remember correctly) the 83kHz frequency can be totally shut off in the"Sonar" tab....

I wonder if the 83kHz frequency were to be shut off during a recording....would the recordings maybe still load into Humviewer...??

I think HB wants every thing under their control but not offer us anything as a result.  We are giving up the HB brand in our SAR because of all the issues. It does not provide the needed information necessary to effect a search..and ensure an unquestionable result.
Families need more reliable searches.

My 83khz beam was not on during recordings and get same issue hum viewer goes to 43 and stops. I ran recording through HB's tool and viewed in si view and it is weird as well. Also, issues when run through HBSI sonar converter. The files will not upload to Navionics sonar charts either. All of the above works in 6.49 but not with 6.57. HB Deborah had this response. "3. The way we gather sonar has changed and this may mean that third party programs such as HumViewer and others will have to be changed. "

Appreciate the comments. A few additional notes about the problem.
1.   I had not made any recordings on the 998c to view with Humviewer prior to upgrading the unit software with revision 6.570. I was reluctanct to upgrade to this version because I didn't see any improvements listed that I was interested in but went ahead and decided to keep the unit at the most current level. Will probably try to reinstall what I think was the earler revision of 6.180 that is listed on this sites downloads for the 998c. Make a few new recordings on next outing and see if Humviewer likes them any better.
2. I had a simliar skewed SIview as shown above after using SON2XTF to convert the 998c 6.570 recordings. Didn't have any previous familiarity with SIview but thought it was odd.
3. During the last recording outing with the 998c 6.570 had an annoying unusal display come up several times that said something like " 360 Imager deployed. Retract ? Yes or NO." I don't have a 360 Image unit and it is not selected in any way on my 998c. Wasn't sure what was causing it to be displayed but just hit "NO" to clear the screen and continue on. I now wonder if that was a possible clue as to how the Humminbird recording format has changed in a way that Humviewr can't now read and causes SIview to skew it's plot. Just speculating but Hummibird may have added some new data fields in the recording format to accomadate processing the 360 imager such as maybe a scan sweep postion indicator field that Humviewer is bothered by. Just a guess but might be close to the cause of the Humviewer lockup.
4.   If 998c_6.180 is the correct earlier version to revert to on the 998c and it makes recordings that Humviewer can process I will probably just stay at that revision for now. If that is the case I will post back that it fixed my problem.

6.49 is the last version before 6.57. Humviewer and si view will work with 6.18 that is for sure. Do not forget to restore defaults before loading V6 software and issue should clear right up.

Made test recording using simulator with 998c 6.570 and it had described problem with Humviewer.  Installed 998c 6.180 and made 2nd test recording with simulator and Humviewer worked  correctly as expected. Checked 998c 6.180 for all 998c features I use and expect and they were all there. Will stay on 998c 6.180 and consider problem solved. Not sure how
998c 6.490 would work with Humviewer as could not find a downloadable copy to try. Thanks for interest and comments.
