1198C SI reading off left side of boat
« on: August 25, 2013, 04:32:54 PM »
Hey there,

I've just purchased and installed a new 1198C with the transom ducer and so far am loving the unit. The only problem I have run into is that it seems that I get less sensitive readings off to the left side of the boat (I have the ducer mounted to the right of my outboard; I don't have  jack plate as I have a Deep Vee Aluminum boat). I'm guessing that the motor could be blocking the sonar a bit but have also tried trimming the motor up as well and it doesn't seem to help much. It appears that I get more data closer to the boat on the left side but I don't get the outward range that I do on the right side. I have attached some pictures to show you what I'm talking about.

Is there anyone out there who has an Aluminum deep V boat with an SI ducer mounted that has been able to get good readings on both sides of the boat?

Maybe you can remove the transducer and mount it to a broom handle/pole and see if it's the transducer or the mounting location.

In addition to what LocDown recommended in checking for blockage...

It is possible that the xducer is rotated clockwise from level...(or even the boat may be listing to the starboard side)...

This would cause the right SI beam to be "aimed" more toward the bottom than the left SI beam...

This could cause "brighter" returns on the right side...

Can I buy another SI transducer and mount it on the other side of the boat? Having one on the left provide left imaging and the one of the right provide right imaging?

I am going to have some time this weekend to fool around with it in the water, I will post the results.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Your idea is definitely possible with this cable...

The right SI, 2d, and Temp would come from the starboard mounted HDSI xducer...
The left SI would come from the port mounted HDSI xducer...

Hey man congrats on the new unit! That readout looks EXACTLY like mine when I don't have the outboard trimmed out enough. Do you have a picture of the transom from the side with motor up and down?

I'll post some pictures of where I / how I have the ducer mounted on my transom Maybe someone will have some ideas on where/if I can move it around. Thanks again everyone for the input!
