Title: Helix 10 with Humminbird AIS RX (Advanced)
Post by: Omarf4 on April 04, 2016, 10:40:01 PM
Advanced nmea0183 and AIS topic....warning.

Looking for some help here on connecting an HB AIS Rx unit to a helix 10. Let me walk you through the setup:
1) helix 10 DI
2) Humminbird AIS RX (receiver only).
3) HB AS HHGPS cable.
4) I also have the nmea2000 gateway connected to my nmea2000 backbone and displaying my evinrude e-Tec data. This part is working fine, no issues here.

Currently trying to connect the Humminbird AIS RX unit through the HHGPS cable through NMEA 0183 since the HB nmea 2000 gateway will not pass AIS PGN's.

Based on several calls to HB Support, the final answer was to connect the Brown (TX+) cable from the AIS to the Green (RX) cable on the HHGPS cable. Then the blue (TX-) cable from the AiS to the common ground (black) which already has the two black cables from the ais and the HHGPS cables connected. Nmea output is turned off on the head unit.

Unfortunately, I am still unable to see AIS under the accessory menu.

Three questions:
1) has anyone connected a Humminbird AIS RX to a helix unit yet? If so how?
2) the ais helix guide indicates that AIS information on a helix unit requires an AIS unit and a heading sensor. HB support indicated that information is incorrect. Is a heading sensor required for AIS info on helix? If so, how? That's two talkers to one listener?
3) based on the info from HB support, the blue (tx-) from the ais unit is to be connected to the common ground. Will that short the TX+ Signal since the AIS RX unit is a multiplexer?

Would really appreciate some help in getting AIS info displayed on my Helix10.

Thanks!

At least I got an email from HB support that they are still looking into this for proper installation (i.e. wire color combo).....

Still baffled how I can't get it to work considering I am using a Humminbird AIS RX with a Humminbird Helix.....

Will update the thread if I ever get this to work...... or hopefully someone can chime in that has gotten this combo to work...
