Title: update question
Post by: Rough House on August 20, 2012, 03:27:45 PM
Been running software version 5.700 for a while now and i was thinking of updating to the newer software.  Was a bit skeptical on downloading the 6.180 version when it came out because of reading all the problems that it was giving people. Are people still having problems with it?
The question i have is, does the 6.420 version have all the features and updates of the 6.180 plus the nema capabilities of 6.420? Or does it just contain the nema2000?  This will be the first time for new software. I see that i have to set to default but should i delete my waypoints off the unit/export to card before doing the update?
Thanks in Advance
RH

The newest update for each model should contain
all the previous software capabilities, plus any new documented
capabilities.

Yes, the current procedure is to back up all your NAV data
to an SD card, then erase all NAV data from your unit prior to updating.
Reset to default settings before and after the update.

It might also be a good idea to bring your NAV data into
HumminbirdPC to verify/clean it before loading it
back into your unit.

I have a 997si and I have updated the software a few times.  I was aware that you had to set your unit back to factory defaults before upgrading software. I just purchased a 1198si and was wondering about the statement about "removing all NAV data" before installing a new software update.  Is this something new that I should do on my 1198 when a new version of software comes out?

It is a precautionary thing that I recommend doing.  We have seen where some Customers have corrupt Nav Data that can cause problems when updating their units.

It could also depend on how active you are about adding/modifying/deleting
waypoints.

For someone who doesn't do much of that, there probably isn't too much
danger of a waypoint getting corrupted.

Thanx for the info, I think I will take your advice and save and remove way points each time I do a software upgrade.

saved all my waypoints and tracks to my card.  Deleted them from my unit.  Updated my unit.  Put my waypoints and tracks into Hum PC and made sure i didnt have any duplicates and then uploaded them into my newly updated 1198 and never had a problem whatsoever.  The update was worth it as well.

That's great news.

That is a good time to check for duplicate waypoints Rough House.

It would be nice if HumminbirdPC had the ability to check for duplicate waypoints (both by position and by name) as a feature in a future update (hint, hint, hint).  I don’t know if they would do this or not but if someone were to add this to the HumminbirdPC Wish List (again: HINT, HINT, HINT!) they will read about it and maybe, just maybe…

Greg,
Be honest with us.

Do the right people actually read the wish list who can
have some influence on getting them implemented, or
is the wish list just smoke?

Have you ever heard one of your colleages say, man that is
a great idea, we should do that?

Just curious.

I have heard from the Humminbird Brand Manager, a former Engineering Software Supervisor, along with a few other Engineers that the Wish Lists on some of the web sites are reviewed for new features.  Think back to the days before the Contour Mode… that is one function that you can trace directly back to this web site.

That's very good to hear Greg.
Thanks.
