Quadrabeam transducer and SI units
« on: March 05, 2014, 12:29:51 PM »
Did some searching on the subject. Below is what HBird Greg had to say on the matter. I had an older quadbeam unit and liked that it gave me a sort of side imaging feature at higher speeds.
I propose adding a transducer switch and quadrabeam ducer for on plane readings on my 898hdsi. My question is this, What does the screen look like when you are in 2d mode? Does it look like the older Quadrabeam screens did?

"Just as an FYI for others that may be wanting to use a QuadraBeam transducer with their Si model units:

 - You can use a QuadraBeam transducer as a stand-alone transducer for these units.  Just select the “Quad Beam” setting for the Connected Transducer (or Transducer Select) menu.  This will tell the unit to add the Side Beam View (this is the QuadraBeam transducers sonar View) and any associated menus.  It will also take away the Si and Di sonar Views and menus.

 - If you use the QuadraBeam transducer in place of the DualBeam transducer when using an AS-Si-DB-Y cable, the QuadraBeam’s extra Side Beams will not be connected to your Si unit and it will act just like a DualBeam transducer (only the 2D sonar element will be connected to the unit).

 - If you use a QuadraBeam transducer with a Transducer Switch (TS3), than you will be able to use the full functionality of the QuadraBeam transducer but will have to not only toggle the Transducer Switch; but also change the Connected Transducer (Transducer Select) menu setting when you switch back and forth between the QuadraBeam and Si transducers."

Yes it will Rotus.  Try setting your unit to the “Quad Beam” setting while in the Simulator and you will see the layout of the display (your unit may not have any simulated QuadraBeam sonar data though).

Cool thanks Greg didn't think of trying that!

Just wondering, can I set the transducer as Quadrabeam and just use compact SI transducer? I figured it may work because it sends out all the same frequencies.

Why would you want this for on plane readings?

Mostly, but also when Im trolling for striper it is easier to see schools when from far away from the screen with the 2d screen format. The quadrabeam is a good setup, for sure.

You can Rotus or even the other way around (set the transducer as the Si transducer but connect to the QuadraBeam).
Be sure and get some screen snapshots of what you end up doing.

Greg, went out today. Since I have the compact SI unit on my trolling motor and was in an electric only lake I could not get on plane readings. But, this picture is taken with the compact SI ducer installed with the quadrabeam ducer chosen in the menu. I also noticed that when I switched it back to the SI ducer, it was only reading out about 2-3x the depth. Cool to know that I can set the unit to quadrabeam and get accurate readings with the SI ducer. Not sure what I was picking up on the right there, but it came and went so I know it isnt RFI. This is proof that even at this shallow depth, you can get a wider 2d bottom scan with the quadrabeam format, and pick up things you would miss with the dual beam.

Ok, now it's getting crazy. I have a 788ci HD on the bow and a 999si on the counsel. My si transducer is mounted to a bow deployment arm. If both the 788 and 999 are connected via ethernet  and the transducer is connected to the 999, will I be able to see side imaging on the 999 and quadrabeam on the 788 at the same time?

Never tried that but I would guess the answer is “No”.  I don’t think that you will have the menu option to do this.  You could manually connect the 999’s transducer to the 788 though and set the transducer to the Quad Beam selection and it work.

Note how strong of a bottom signal Rotus had in the Side Beams in his screen snapshot above.  That is the result of the more focused (narrower front-to-back) Si beams versus the more elliptical shaped Side Beams of the QuadraBeam transducer.  The software wasn’t written for more focused Si beams.

And it is this reason that leads me to believe that the on plane quadra side readings would be relatively vague with the SI transducers. I will give that a shot my next trip out.

Yes, it could be.  I don’t think I ever tried using an Si transducer as a QuadraBeam at high speed.  You got me interested in how this will end up working.  Of course the Si transducer has to be mounted where it will not get any air bubbles across the sides of the transducer.

You know you will have to post some screen snapshots of this don't you?  ;D
