Adding 597ci HD Di along side 999
« on: August 22, 2014, 01:57:29 PM »
I still have not gotten decent DI images with my 999.  I read the posts regarding using a dedicated DI transducer but that just sounds too complicated.  I have my old 597di unit and am wondering if there will be any signal interference if I decide to use that unit along side my 999.  I can mount the transducer where it will not physically interfere with the 999 beam but do I need a certain distance between the transducers?

Try setting your beam to medium or narrow on the 999 DI & report back.   ;)

Try the 597 DI xducer on your 999...you might be surprised at how much better the DI images are..

Nothing complicated...just unplug your XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...and plug the XNT 9 DI T in its place...

If there is an AS SIDB Y cable in your setup using a shoot thru in the bilge....same scenario....unplug the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T (from the AS SIDB Y cable)... and plug the XNT 9 DI T in its place...

Do not change the "Transducer Select" menu option from "Hi Def SideScan"...
Do not set the "DI Width" setting to "Narrow"....use the "Medium" or "Wide" setting...

Your SI image views will only show detail on the right SI...the left SI will be blank...

Your DI views will look normal...albeit better quality...

If you like the new DI views from the XNT 9 DI T xducer...then we will work on setting you up with the HB TS3 switch to easily switch between the xducers...

As far as interference with the 597 DI running simultaneously with the 999...there's really no way to predict until you try it...

The 999 transmits the 200kHz all the time...

The 597 DI transmits the 200kHz in depths over 10'...(I think this is true unless there is new enough software in the 597 to show the "Digital Depth Source" menu...which allows the unit to be forced to get digital depth reading from the DI piezo)...

Mounting the XNT 9 DI T on the transom along with the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T can cause physical partial blockage in the SI sound pulse...so some adjustment should be expected...

If I set one of my (SI) machines to  83KHz and one to 200 KHz I get a lot less cross talk Rickie - worth trying here.......

Shutting off the 83kHz 60° beam in one unit can definately lessen the likelihood of overlapping beams...

(It is not possible to shut off the 200kHz beam in a HB SI unit...even with the "Beam Select" menu set to 83kHz only - the 200kHz still transmits)...

200 KHz TX all the time - I'm just saying that's how I help to clean up the ecreens & view 2D on both with less splatter... >:D

Overlapping beams makes interesting experiments on the water...

Troll past another boat while he's fishing and aim the SI beam at him...and see if your display will tell you what frequency he's watchin...

If he is watching SI ... One of your 2 frequencies will show sprites on the SI side you "scanned" him with...

I believe my transom may be configured to neatly handle the three transducer array.  The line of sight for the SI transducer is clear left and right.  The 2D and DI transducers mount forward of the SI and there is almost 80" separating the DI and 2D.  If needed I can switch the DI to 83mhz and the 2D to 200mhz .  It is possible that the DI and SI beams might interfere with each other.  I just need to temporarily install the DI and see what happens.

The XNT 9 DI T does not have 83kHz...

It's still worth the effort to try the scenario you have there...it may work fine...

If it doesn't ...come back here and we'll work it out...

When I install the 597di I will have three transducers (SI, DI and 2D).  My initial trials will be involve all three.  If that works OK then I'm probably finished.  If it does not work (probably due to interference) then I may need the TS3 switch but I don't know how the switch works.

With a TS3 switch will I still have all three transducers?

If you are going to use the 597 DI with its own XNT 9 DI T xducer...the HB TS3 switch may not be necessary in your setup...

If you are going to use the XNT 9 DI T as a second DI xducer on the SI unit...the HB TS3 switch will be necessary...

The HB TS3 switch allows connection of 2 xducers to 1 head unit...

One leg of the HB TS3 switch will go to the XNT 9 DI T ...
One leg of the HB TS3 switch will go to the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...

The main connector of the HB TS3 switch will plug into the SI head unit...

The HB TS3 switch selects one xducer or the other...but not both at the same time

Is the 2d xducer on the transom used on a standalone unit...??

Thanks Rickie,
My plan is to test the whole thing using a stand alone 597di and a stand alone 999.  The 999 has an SI and separate 2D( for depth readings at speed).  All transducers are on the transom.  Hopefully the stand alone units will work correctly.  If not I will try the TS3 switch if I can plug the switch into the existing SIDB Y cable leaving the 2D working.

I am hoping that the separation I have between transducers on the transom will prevent/minimize any interference.

You are correct the AS SIDB Y cable can be plugged into the HB TS3 switch ...which would still allow you to use your current HDSI and 2d for depth readings...

Before you actually spend the money on a HB TS3 switch ...it might be a good idea to simply test the XNT 9 DI T on the 999...

You might find that the DI images from the 597 are sufficient for your application....in which case the HB TS3 switch would not be needed for your setup...

I ran my tests today with the 597di and 999si as stand alone units.  The 597di images are obviously smaller but crisper than the 999 di images.  The 597 does induce some interference on the 999 images.  I tried running one transducer at 455 and the other at 800 but the interference continued.   My conclusion is that the stand alone setup won't give me the results I desire.

Next trip out I will test the 597di transducer plugged directly into the 999 to see how the images look on the BIG SCREEN.

It makes interesting comparison to make consecutive passes over the same structure when comparing DI images (from the stock XHS 9 HDSI 180 T) vs the DI images from the "dedicated DI" xducer...

In the following 2 DI images...I had marker buoys on both sides of the brushpile I was scanning...so that I could pass over the structure with the same boat track each scan pass...

XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ("DI from SI" technology)...connected to my 1197 ...

Same brushpile scanned from same direction with the XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T (Dedicated DI xducer)...connected to my 1197...

Here's another shot of that same brushpile scanned with the XTM 9 WIDE DI 20 T ("Dedicated DI xducer")...connected to my 1197...

Scanned at same boat path with a few tweaks in the settings...(boat speed, chart speed, upper Range, Lower Range)...

Thanks Rickie
There is certainly more detail with the dedicated DI transducer.  Does the DI image appear in the regular DI window on the 1197 or does it appear in the Right side view of the SI screen?  And finally is that a large fish in the last image?

Thanks for all you help

The HB core units (non ONIX/ION) do not have an "identification channel" in the xducers which tells the head unit what xducer is attached to it...

Therefore the "Transducer Select" menu under the Sonar tab is what tells the unit which views to make available...

With the DI xducer connected to a HB SI unit...the unit still has the same views as if a SI xducer were attached..

The DI image will show in the DI view as a normal DI view...

The SI image will only show an image on the right side ... (The left side of the SI image will be black/blank ...because there is no wire channel in the DI xducer that matches up to the left SI channel in the head unit...therefore no data for the left SI image to display)...
_________________

There were a lot of Asian carp in the area I was scanning...(I assume I captured one in that last shot...that's about the correct size echo for a fish that size)...
