I am planning on purchasing a new unit in near future but have many questions and thought I would ask 1 of them now. I currently have a ~ 3yrs old 777C2 (200/83 sonar with switchfire). I was fishing a new body of water yesterday that had experienced a good rise in water level ( ~ 2ft) from alot of rain. Rumor mill was "fish are up shallow". I was weaving in around alot of flooded cypress and lilly pads. Many locals were catching crappie, but I not being familiar with the waters = no luck. Water depth was about 3-5ft deep amongst the cypress, water clear to just stained.
my question is, would side scan help in a situation like that where the water is shallow with lilly pads to help make the trip more productive, and help eliminate alot of nonproductive areas.

many thanks. Would you have to adjust settings to accommodate the shallow water, or would they be same as deeper water say ~15-20 FOW?

Good side imaging displays are based on settings. This is somnething you will have to play with and get it right for your application.
Take some play time and experiment..It will be worth the investment of time..

Some of the water I fish has Lilly pads and the depth of water varies. would there be a lot of artifact or problems scanning side to side within water like that?

If surface clutter gets to be an issue you can set the surface sensitivity to diminish the clutter.

SI works best in deeper waters. I've used it in 3ft or less and it really doesnt work well. Plus when i using SI im looking for structure that fish relate to not actual fish. Plus in really shallow water a pair of Native Polarize sunglasses works better than SI =)

I have used side scan in water less than 2 feet with setten adjustment, worked real good, and yes you could ID fish. ducks,sharks,tire,ankor,tree stumps, bush pile,brick wall,pipe line,rock pile and ship wk.
Adjustment of the setting's and use time are the best teacher!!!!!

Actually if you are using the surface mounted transducer it works better in shallower water (depending on the target size). for depths below 40 feet a tow fish make the side image standout..
Remember this is primarily a side looking wide beam and it is all about shaddow...
