Title: Tested Update as Promised-comparison of 2 humminbird units ref post of 4-20-2011

Well readers, I tried that Humminbird 870DI and found it is much more than it seems.  IMHO it is hard to beat the price for what you get.  The "DI" is great and contrary to that which you see in the ad(s) it is NOT ALL grey scale or green scale as the case may be.  When you adjust the brightness and contrast, you can get a VERY comforting "blue hue". The options of "view" are many and split screens (both vertical and horizontal) provide flexibility.
I had people tell me that in addition to color, the pixels of the 596 @640 by 640 vs this 870 @ 640 by 320 would show greatly in sharpness. (my goodness my old 400TX was only 160by160!) That is true but only to one small extent.  IF you have the chart speed over #6 it does make it less clear.  I settled on a chart speed of #4 and it stays clear and crisp in ALL views!
That XNT-9-DI-T transducer that comes with the 870DI is the same one used on the 596 and is awesome.
Sat up and over some brush piles, saw the fish clear as a bell, saw my jig as it was dropping and knocked the fire out of some big slab crappie.
Do not forget to get an AD-XTM-9 kit for a mere $12 IF you are going to attach the transducer to your trolling motor. It fits like a glove.
I am keeping it and find it is a great replacement for my 400TX that bit the dust recently. Saved me right at $300 and doing the job I wanted it to do, and then some.
