898 loses colors
« on: June 27, 2014, 05:04:11 PM »
I have a 3 year old 898 plotter sounder.  It came with the transom mount transducer, which after some discussion, Humminbird determined was defective and replaced.  Since new, this machine has had a very odd habit of losing it's ability to properly display colors, except for a very faded yellow.  I also found the transom mount transducer to be so poor in performance, that I gave up entirely and put in an Airmar tilted element thru hull.  The thru hull reads bottom at all speeds and it provided much better resolution, at first.  Yesterday, the machine was back to it's yellow, all the returns on the sounder are yellow.  It does this after it's been on for the whole day, especially if there are a lot of fish around, no sarcasm, quite serious.  It's very frustrating.  I have reset the machine several times, it's good for a minute or so, but before I can even go back to all the settings, it's yellow again.  Any thoughts?  I'm not sending the machine back, I commercially fish and can't be without a sounder, so.....

could it be a battery issue?  Have you checked this to rule it out?

Not a battery issue....running 14+ and everything is in good order.  This likely isn't simple, I've been doing this 24 years and have never seen anything like it and I've seen a lot.  I'm vry dissatisfied with this machines performance, overall, especially the greatly hyped but totally useless imaging feature, it simply does not work in almost any situation that is useful.  I fish exclusively in salt water, from 0-200'.

I saw a post where a guy had less return on the left w/side imaging, same here, sent the machine back, they said it was fine but gave me a free new ducer, didn't help.  I have installed many ducers, thru hull, skimmer and in hull, never had a problem.

The easiest test in these situations is to cross test the head unit and transducer with another SI unit...(testing your head unit in another setup...and testing another head unit on your setup)...

This gives a very reliable determination of whether the issue is your head unit or your xducer and/or boat wiring setup....

It doesn't matter which size SI unit setup you cross test with...
