798c Software Update Problem
« on: March 22, 2010, 11:41:15 PM »
I tried to install the update on mine this afternoon, and the screen started blinking with a message that said, "software updating. Do not interupt."  So, I didn't....3 hrs. later it was doing the same thing and I had to remove the unit to get it to turn off.  Any advice?
BTW, I was updating from the 4.620 to the 4.780.  There was an update between them that I skipped, but that isn't the problem, is it?

Shot Yacht,

Welcome to the forum.  I have split your post off as a new topic to keep from getting the issues confused.

When did you insert the SD card, before or after you powered on the unit?

And did you restore the defaults before updating?

If you remove the SD card and try to power it back on, does it power up, or does it continue to flash?

I had a similar issue.  Although, I had my 798 powered up on the bench.  Tried a couple times, same result.  Without the transducer, it defaults to demo mode, and will not update.  I manually selected normal mode, and the update went fine, took about 15 seconds.

You say you had to remove the unit to power off, so I assume your tducer is installed.  Just  make sure you're not in demo mode for some reason.

Firstly, I inserted the card before powering the unit up, and yes, I had previously restored the factory defaults.
I turned the unit on yesterday, and it came up and was acting fine.  I don't know if the update was successful or not.
GT, yes the transducer is installed.
Should I try it again, or try to install the version that I skipped before trying to upload the latest version?
Thanks in Advance,

shot yacht,

I imaging the update did not take or was not complete.  You can check by going into the System Status at start up.  When the unit starts to boot, press menu and select System Status.  The software version should be displayed.  It may say the correct update, but did not complete or install properly.  If so, you will need to go back to a previous version, then install the latest one again.

I would recommend doing the following for each install.

Turn the unit on, restore the defaults, then insert the SD card with the latest update.  The unit will ask you if you want to replace the existing software version with the new one.  Say yes and folllow the prompts.  Once the update is complete and the unit reboots, remove the SD card.  Once unit completely powers on, restore the defaults again, just a an added measure.

Here are some step by step instructions.  If you notice, they say to insert the SD card after power up.  Not sure why this is, but some units will not take the update if you put the SD card in before you power on.

I also did a video showing hot to do the update using this method.

Good Luck and let me know how it comes out.
