SI xducer vs. QB xducer
« on: December 07, 2009, 04:43:12 PM »
I have the 798ci SI. I have the factory SI(200/85?) transducer mounted. Having been a veteran of the old Wide series with the optional wide side transducer, I have contemplated adding the QB transducer to the 798ci. I frequently would use the wide side transducer for scanning the sides with the Wide Vision Sounder and miss that feature in the SI. I know that I can see 180d R/L with the SI system, but the scanning area to the sides is extremely narrow. My question(s) are: (1) Can the QB xducer be added to the 798ci via the "Y" cable and selected from the menu or is the transducer switch required? (2)If the switch is required is there some means available to switch the xducer via the menu as I assume the 798ci would be unable to "see" the QB in it's attached devices list? Currently I see no menu item for selecting the QB xducer. (3) Is there any "SI" functionality when using the QB xducer or does it only scan similarly as the old Wide Vision wide side transducer did?

(1) For the Side Beams of the QuadraBeam transducer to work you will have to use the TS2-W Transducer switch.  The AS-Si-DB-Y splitter cable will not make electrical connection to these beams when used.

(2) Look under the “Sonar” menu tab in the main tabbed menu system.  At the bottom of the menu list should be a “Transducer Select” menu.  You will need to use the “Quad Beam” setting to get full usage of the QuadraBeam transducer.

(3) The QuadraBeam will work the same way it did with yoru Wide Vision unit except that it has a few added format options for the Side Beam data (see the “Quad Layout” menu when in the Side Beam View) and is in color.

Thanks Greg for the reply. Wasn't real wild about using the switch, but at least the hole is still there from the old Wide switch. I am assuming from the comment that with the switch is switched to the QB that the 798 will see it; the QB, and display it in the menu options. Presently the option of the QB is not available, unlike the old Wide Vision that had the wide side beam in the menu whether the xducer was present or not.

What?
The “QuadBeam” menu setting should always show up in the Transducer Select menu.  What menu selections is the Transducer select menu showing on your 798 unit?

Glad to hear that Jeff.  I was worried that the menus in your unit might have gotten messed up somehow…

I suppose this is a one time "select" in the menu and from that point forward a person just selects which ducer from the A & B on the switch?

Everytime you change the switch you will have to go back and select the correct transducer.  There isn't a transducer version auto-detect like the old Wide series.  You do get some funky SI images if you do not switch to "quad", but don't know (haven't tested) what the quad screen display looks like with a SI transducer.
If it bends my rod, I'm a happy fisherman.
