Networking g2n to older units
« on: December 31, 2016, 03:40:25 AM »
Hi guys, i were looking at this networking chart from humminbird and it seem like the new g2n units will share radar, 360 imaging, waypoints and tracks with the 97/98 series. And thats a good thing, but why doesent it share regular (non chirp) 2d sonar with these units? Isnt that possible if chirp would be locked on the g2n?
And if that is possible is it also possible to share 2d between an onix and a 1197?

Best wishes of a happy new year to all of you guys. :-)

The Onix won't share anything except waypoints to anything except another Onix or Ion unit ...... Took them quite a while to add the waypoint sharing.

I don't think the 98 series and earlier are going to get any more software updates.....maybe something necessary in the software.  I think the 99 series just got an update that gives some of that functionality, but the 98 series is now 3 generations old.

Okay, thanks for the reply. :-) isnt it kind of odd that they will share the new chirp radar but not the 2d?

It is odd that the chirp radar is supported .... hope that's not a mistake on the spreadsheet.

The Radar and 360 are Ethernet accessories ... It makes sense the 360 on original radar would still be OK.  With the Ethernet accessory, the radar pings and receive are handled in the radar .... not in the unit.  Maybe that is the difference?

In regard to CHIP being supported and 2d not, it could make sense... When companies decide what to support the would have way more potential enhancements than would actually make it into each release, therefore they need to prioritize.

Presumably  your older unit has other 2d options but doesn't have CHIRP so supporting this new feature would add something to that unit you don't already have. Also its my understanding that CHIRP would do about the same as 2d but potentially  better. So I could see Humminbird thinking that would support CHIRP first and then look at putting the money and time for 2d into other features ahead

Again assuming its not a type o.  Just remember every supported feature needs to be planned designed coded and maybe even hardware design and speed and capacity issues, and time to market etc, so there are many reasons beyond what looks easier to do that goes into any feature
