Title: Details of SD card slot capability
Post by: SpineyNole on February 08, 2015, 02:10:40 PM
Greg or someone else in the know, would like to know some detailed information about the SD card slots in the Humminbird SI units (in my case the 1197):

What SD card standards do the SD card slots in the 1197 support? SD (standard) or SDHC (high-capacity) or SDXC (ultra-high-capacity)? High Speed (HS) or Ultra High Speed (UHS)? If HS, Class 6 or Class 10? If UHS, UHS-class 1 or UHS-class 3?

I know that in the past, Greg recommended SanDisk Extreme-III SDHC cards if you desire to record sonar data, but those cards are no longer in production. They currently sell Standard, Ultra, Ultra Plus, Extreme, Extreme Plus, and Extreme Pro. Of these being produced now, which do you recommend for sonar recording?

What write speed is required to support sonar recording. If we knew that, the choice for SD card would be simple.

Also, do all Humminbird SI units use the same capability SD slots?

Would be nice if we had a table that would supply this information for all the SI units. Would make it much easier to determine which SD card to buy for the user's desired use.

When I first started recording four years ago, I had to purchase the SanDisk Extreme to get a rate of 30MB/s.
Awhile ago SanDisk changed the recording rates on the Ultra to 30MB/s and the Extreme to 45MB/s.
I have had good results with the 30MB/s cards. Be careful as there are some old cards (lower rate) still out there.( Ultra's at 15MB/s)

The faster cards have the ability to copy your info faster.  I believe that most use an ultra or faster card.  I just use the fastest card that I can find available and have never had a problem.  I have even used the micro cards in an adapter and have not had a problem.  I just checked and all of my current cards are ultras.

I have used class 6 cards with no issue at all.

Our units support the SD and SDHC type memory cards.
Last I heard was that we tested an SDHC memory card with a speed class rating of 6 and it worked fine.  This was at least a year ago and may have changed but I have not heard otherwise.

We have not always (nor I doubt in the future) ever always used the same SD card reader in our products.  Times change and parts availability change as well.
