Topic: Anyone installed side imaging without mounting on jackplate?

I need to get some ideas on how and where to mount my SI transducer, I dont have a jackplate to mount onto. I have a Ranger R73 and I dont see any good place to mount the transducer, besides fabricating a bracket of the regular motor mount, but that puts the transducer directly in front of the motor- Bad? If anyone has ideas or especially pictures, it would REALLY help me out. Thanks guys.

Welcome to the forum. 

You should be able to mount the transducer off the transom but you will lose 2d and SI at high speed.  The other alternative is to mount it down by the drain plug and water intake.  This will give you good results but will make the transducer more succeptable to hitting structure, stumps, limbs, etc.  If you fish areas with lots of stumps, this may be a risk, and the transducers are not cheap.

You need to go out on the water before you install and check the turbulence around the transom when you are running at trolling speed and running fast.

Most guys have mounted them on the transom or jack plate, but tend to lose 2d at speed.  So they install an in-hull (shoot-thru) transdcuer with Y cable in the bilge to get good 2d readings.

Just some thoughts.  Do check out Dougs site though.  He has more experience with Bass Boats!

i have mine mounted by the drain plug.seems to work good.been there for over two years

I see three possibilities that other Ranger owners have used:

Green Boxes on each side of the motor.  Either side will work but you will have to trim the motor up high enough so that the Si beam will not get blocked on the motor side.

Blue Arrow is the location on the transom by the drain plug.  more easily damaged and sometimes causes water intake problems for the motor and/or water flow problems through the prop.

Orange Arrow shows about where some have been installing a plastic Thru-Hull transducer (XPTH-9-HDSi-180-T) or where they are using the standard HDSi transducer along with one of Scap's adapters from Transducer Shield & Saver.
