A friend has the 727. The unit keeps giving High Voltage alarms and the temperature is reading all over the place. It finally settles in at -4 degrees F and 16.3 volts on battery power alone. Verified voltage with a digital VOM at 12.5 vdc. Depth works perfectly. Tried the 727 head on my SI transducer and everything worked perfectly all day. Back on his boat and goes crazy again. Finally connected the 727 to my old Matrix 37 ducer to the 727 and everythings ok. We will be ordering a new transducer for the 727. I could not explain the voltage readings. BTW it also read 16.3 volts in Simulator mode.

When you tested the 727 on the other transducers, was this on the same boat or a different one? Did the voltage read high than as well?
Does the 727 only do this when the main motor is running?
What software version is he running in the 727 unit?

Ok, this my be a little confusing:
My friends boat is boat A, My boat is boat B
1) With the 727 on boat A, The volts read high up to 20 volts and temp anywhere from 75 to -4 degrees with the motor NOT running. Voltage settled at 16.3 v. Sonar readings were normal.
2) I put the 727 head on boat B with my installed SI transducer. Absolutly no problems for over 6 hours.
3) Took the 727 head back to Boat A and plugged in using existing mount. Same results as #1.
4) Took the mount apart to check each cable connection, wiggle them, tug them. Everything straight and correct. No change in indication. Disconnected the transducer and started the unit in Simulator mode. The sonar image looked great as it always does in Simulator mode but the voltage still read 16.3 volts. I thought if the TD was the problem, the voltage would read normal. Not so.
5) Used a DVM to check the voltage at the plug and the battery terminals with the engine off. Solid 12.5 vdc. Plugged in power and TD cables to the unit and turned it on. 727 read 16.3 v while DVM reading 12.5 at battery terminals.
6) Brought down my old Quad Beam transducer from my Matrix 37 to boat A. Plugged in the QB TD to the 727 head while powered from boat A. Temp and voltage read normal.
7) Plugged in boat A TD again powered from boat A. Results of #1 returned.
8 ) It will take a couple days to get the software version. I doubt that it has ever been updated since leaving the factory.

You are right: that is confusing. Update the software and see if that helps. I don’t know how the transducer would cause this problem and don’t know that updating the software will but it seems to only happen on your boat with that specific transducer.
Maybe you just have some bad electrons in your battery! ;D

Examine every inch of that 727 transducer cable looking for cuts or crimps. Or a screw point that has pieced the transducer outer covering, etc. The only thing I could think of is the transducer shield (which is also ground) came in contact with another voltage source. This could be from a 2nd battery in the boat that is not grounded to your battery supplying the 727. Can happen on an aluminum boat easier than a fiberglass.

How do you update the software without a SD chip slot?
To update the software for a 727 unit you have to use the HumminbirdPC program and the PC Connect Kit cables. Instructions come with the cables. Note that if you do not have an open serial port than you will also need a USB to serial adapter as well. These can be bought many places and does not have to come from Humminbird.
