I've had a lot of problems with my 998 shutting down lately. Whenever I press the "view" key and get to the "snapshot and recording"screen the unit will shutdown if I hesitate at all on this view. If I press the view key again quickly and proceed to the next screen I can usually keep it on. I have never used the screenshot function and I don't typically keep a card in the slot (I do have a Navionics card in one slot). This has been going on for a several months now (maybe since the last time I updated firmware- not positive).
This weekend I was out fishing and at the end of the day I scrolled over to my home port with the cursor and pressed the "goto" button. The unit shutdown as soon as I pressed the goto key. After I booted the unit back on I tried again with the same result and after several tries I gave up. I had used this function several times earlier in the day with no trouble.
Any ideas what's causing this?

I'd run a separate fused power and ground straight to a known good battery first just to eliminate the possibility of it being a power supply/electrical issue. I know mine would shut down when I would push a button when I tried to run it with a borderline power supply at the house.

Thanks for the advice. I was also thinking it might be a power issue.

Make sure the power contact pins on the back of the unit are clean and good. You can use a small slot screwdriver to carefully and slightly bend the pins to make solid contact.

Clear history of navigation data. If there is important information - save in the program HumminbirdPC

Navionic - thanks for the suggestion. How does this fix my problem?

I'd make sure the Navionics card is locked for write-protection.
You DO NOT want to accidently write to the Navionics card.

Navionic - thanks for the suggestion. How does this fix my problem?
Incorrect navigation data lead to the shutdown unit.

I had this problem with my 997.
In the end it was the new update I installed as corrupt, I downgraded the update to an earlier version then ran the update again - this solved the problem ;)
