Title: How to verify which GPS is active
Post by: whosmatt on August 10, 2014, 01:12:08 PM
Hi all,

Just got a closeout 788cxi HD XD direct from Humminbird to replace my 768.  I needed the 50KHz and the extra power for deeper salt water, and the color, dual card slots, and upgraded contour xd mapping doesn't hurt either :D

Question:  I left my AS GR50 on the boat as it's the only way I have to connect to my DSC radio right now, cable wise.  I set the unit's GPS override to External, but is there any way to verify which receiver I'm actually using?  Either way I set it, I'm getting NMEA data out to my radio, so that part seems good.

Thanks,

Love the unit so far.

You could always place some tin foil over the external GPS Receiver as that should block any signals from the satellites from getting to the GPS antennae.  If your unit is still tracking your position it shows that the internal GPS Receiver is being used.  It would be interesting to know if you also lose the GPS input to your DSC radio when you do that.

Thanks, Greg.  I'll try that test when I get a chance and report back.
