I use a Radio Shack 12V power adaptor

Hate to see her go, but love to watch her leave.

This is probably overkill, but I put a 3 amp fuse between the power source and my unit.
We have a lot of power surges in this area because of industry and I don't know how an adapter would handle it.

Are you asking about the fuse or the power cord to the unit?

The manual for the 998c gives a current draw of 825ma. so any good supply providing 12V and at least 1 amp should work ok. Considering all the posts I have seen about interference problems I would be a bit cautious about wall-wart type converters because they may not supply clean enough power.

It appears that the supply reddog is using is clean enough, but checking it on Radio Shack it appears to be a bit expensive at $61.99 for what you get (only 3 amp output). But it appears to be a nice compact unit.

I am using one of these (though not the exact same one)....:http://www.walmart.com/ip/Stanley-500-Amp-Jump-Starter-with-Compressor/13035281

No particular reason why.... it is just what I have on hand.... however it is a multi-tasker... heck I can start the boat with it and air up the trailer tires if I need to... ;)

All the connectors on the back of the 998c look to be proprietary to me, so no standard connectors.... also if you are not using the cable collector, watch the polarity of your connection, because the power cable can be plugged in wrong if it is not in the collector.

Sorry..... not that.... The power cord for a 998c can be plugged into the unit upside down if it is not in the cord collector insert....

I'm guessing you haven't had a chance to read the installation guide that came with the unit yet. Once you look at it and check out the power cord, cord collector, and cord collector insert what I am saying should become clearer.

If you need me to I can get a camera out and post pictures showing exactly what I am talking about....

Tried a simalar jump starter in my boat except no compressor.  Planned use was to jump my Merc 200 when I ran down main battery.

Nice thought but no where near enough juice for merc  :'(

Jerry

So is it a problem on 998c if plugged in upside down?

Can't say for sure.... But for what I paid for mine I am certainly not going to hook it up with reverse polarity to check it out.... :'( I figure there is a reason that the cord collector insert is keyed so the power cable can only be hooked up one way.... as long as it is in the insert.... ;)

thanks straw.  I see.

Now I just have to figure out how to get a non-HB connector the right way into the collector.

Oh my.... sorry, I seem to be getting you more confused.... it is simple really....

Use the power cable that came with your unit.

Hook the red wire to the positive side of whatever power source you choose, hook the black wire to the negative side.

Follow the installation instructions for the cord collector insert and the cord collector and plug it into the back of the unit....

Only fits one way as long as you use all the parts as the instructions state.... ;)

Good comment.  I went back to the picture from reddog.  I see the connectors on the front where HB wires connect.

Much easier than I was making it.

If you plug it in, or connect it with reverse polarity, it wont turn on..  Yes, you can get the power plug to connect to the unit either way, but its much harder to do, the newer the unit is because there is a slight angled edge on the inside of the power cord that when new, shouldnt allow, but as it wears down with use, will..     There is a small "ear" on the outside of the power cord, that goes up.  Once you learn this, itll become second nature.

I would get a second PC11 Humminbird power cord for whatever supply youre going to use..  Winter comes around here every year..  Theyre cheap..

Yes, the adaptor I use is a little expensive, if youre just going to power a depth finder, but it works for alot of other devices also.

I liked it best, because it delivers 13.9 volts and 3.? amps continuous, so it easily falls within the realm of what the Birds are supposed to run at..  No need to install a 3a fuse, when the output is static..

Reddog--

Good info....sounds like these units MIGHT be reverse polarity protected but as I said earlier I don't intend to test that  ;).

My 998c is brand new and the very first time I checked the power cord (without power applied) it easily connected either way. I noticed that one of the posts on the unit was slightly rounded but it didn't offer any protection... at least on mine.

I also like your power supply, it is a nice compact unit, I just think it is a little expensive for that limited current... For instance here might be another option: http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-PS3KX-3-Amp-12-Volt-Supply/dp/B0002JTD2K/ref=sr_1_84?ie=UTF8&qid=1355762242&sr=8-84&keywords=12v+dc+power+supply.

The fuse should be there to protect the power adapter/converter (and your house wiring) not the Humminbird unit.

The units do have some reverse polarity protection but I would not risk it either for what they cost.
