899 ci hd si hd transducer upgrade blurry imaging
« on: March 14, 2014, 10:01:11 PM »
hey guys I just purchased the 899 a couple weeks ago and then decided to do the hd transducer upgrade got everything dialed in on 455khz perfect images.  then when i switch to 800khz the display is blurry almost like too much sensativity and other settings were off, when i drop the sens to the lowest setting and the contrast almost all the way up I finally get a better reading, i did however notice while running over some shallower water the images cleared up a bit side and down , the hb unit has its own battery supply all connections are flawless., its mounted on a trolling motor, blurry picture with motor on or off. this unit is used on a pond boat in southflorida and then up in northern wisconsin in the summer. any ideas of what could be causing this issue? on a side note if i keep all factory settings the image is more hazy then ever, here are some pics to show my current issue.

Hmmm, unit or transducer… Do you know of anyone else that has a Humminbird Si unit that you could cross-test with?  Any model Humminbird will do, just make sure and test your unit at 800kHz (and the other if it is capable).  Otherwise there is no way to tell which is the cause of the problem and you would have to ship them both in to Humminbird to test.

I have the IDENTICAL problem.  I set my transducer setting to my new HD transducer on the unit as well.  Is it possible that it could be a software problem?  My images at 455 are incredible, but my 800 kHz are blown out or almost blank when the sensitivity is turned down.

I’m not going to rule out the possibility of this being a software problem but if it were than everyone who has bought an 899ci HD Si unit would be having the same problem and we would be seeing a lot more posts about them.

Greg,

I don't think most of the 899 units came with the 800 kHz transducer (at least none of the ones I looked at).  They came with the compact transducer that I had to send in to upgrade to the  XHS 9 HDSI 180 T.  It looks like the unit is so new, it isn't even listed on the Humminbird website's software version list.

And thanks for the quick response!   Anything you can do to help is GREATLY appreciated!!

ive upgraded the ducer to the hd, switched it over in the machine as such. did the software update but havent tested yet this weekend should be a good time. i hope it was a software issue cause i have honestly used the unit three times and with the new ducer twice. and its only a month old getting kind of annoyed. i bought a 798 two years ago and the unit worked awesome then i went on vaca to northern wisconsin and the unit took a crap. hope this one isnt a junker as well.......im going to test this weekend with the latest software update i will take snap shots and repost. hope this was the fix.

There have been a fair number who have upgraded the transducers or at least that have posted that they have.  I have not seen reports from that many so far.  Try the new software and cross-testing on another 800kHz capable Si transducer if you can, than call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks.

Thanks Greg,

I called HB today, and they are sending me a new transducer.  I'll post an update as soon as I test it.

Called hb today and they emailed me a shipping label and I am sending the unit back to them. Not sure why we didn't try a Ducer but anyhow tomorrow it ships out.

Maybe they figure they can test out both that way.  Your unit and my transducer.  You never know, I may be sending back the transducer and unit if the new transducer doesn't work.   I suppose it has to be one or the other!

Took the boat out today with the new transducer and there was no change to the 855 side scan.  Here are 2 pics of the same oil rig (one in 800 and one in 455)

I tested mine as well, when I switch from 455 to 800, same thing you all are observing.

Has this issue been resolved with anyone?

Just curious - I am considering purchasing a 899 and will need the 800kh to work right.

This is terrible news, I just upgraded from a pain in the butt lowrance to HB and I was worried about buying a new unit without many user reviews. Lakes are still frozen here in MN but I hope this gets sorted out soon.

JVM1,  The unit is awesome and you won't be disappointed.  at 455 kHz, the picture is amazing, and the unit is VERY user friendly.  The only real problem is that we paid for an upgraded transducer that doesn't seem to give us 800 kHz images.  455 kHz is better for general structure anyway, and I probably will only use the 800 kHz on occasion, but it is just frustrating that the 800 kHz isn't working.  Did you upgrade your transducer as well?

Yes I did upgrade it. Having even installed it yet though, hopefully we have open water here in 2 weeks, lots of ice left.
Good to hear that the unit is great anyways, hopefully this glitch gets sorted out soon.

jvm1, I echo what rsouza3 says about the 899 unit.  455 kHz draws amazing images and easy to use.  Hbird will work through the 800 kHz issue.  I don't think you will be disappointed.

well, bad news.....two different control heads and two different transducers.  None of them (in any combination) worked on the 800 kHz mode.  I'll post the images tomorrow.

These are of something (boat or container I suspect), one in 455 and one in 800.  the 800 is the bad one.

No updates from Humminbird about this problem?  I'm going in the water next week (ocean) I have no other electronics or interference near the transducer.  I hope this can be fixed!

I have the HDSI for the TM, but am currentlt running the compact TM (455) I had heard there was a software issue the HB Engrs. are aware of & working on - once that is fixed I will switch mine over.
I was running a 798 (can you say mapping ONLY next to the 899??) at the bow, so I already had that mounted....
Have patience folks - they will get it fixed - I will be using 455 most of the time, but wanted the HDSI up there for the"pretty" pictures.
The 455 gives a lot better coverage though. :)

I just saw that the new software for our 899 unit is out.  the current version is 7 020.  I just loaded it on my unit.  the previous software version was 6.820.  Good luck!!
