It's about 4 yrs. old and all of a sudden the depth finder won't shut off unless I unplug it from the electrical mount. It stays off once I plug it back in and the power button works fine to power it up just won't shut off. Thanks for any help.

DID YOU TRY HOLDING THE BUTTON DOWN FOR 2 OR 3 SECONDS ?

In addition to the above post: check and see if this happens with the transducer and GPS Receiver unplugged. If it does, plug one or the other back in and test again. There may be some area on the cabling of either that has been cut and is grounding out on your boat’s ground system. Determine which it is and replace that accessory.

I had the same unit and same problem, had to turn off the hint by removing it from the base. Probably completely unrelated but formatted my SD card due to a separate issue and the issue hasn't returned...

I just experienced this myself, I updated my firmware to the 6.740 then I put it in simulation mode to reprogram my shortcuts and preferences. After doing this I could not shut the unit down and had to Remove the unit from the boat to shut it off. I then went back to the 6.250 update and the unit works perfect, I tried everything when the 6.740 was installed and nothing worked.

You may want to try and download a new copy of the 6.740 software and try it again, just to make sure you didn’t get a corrupted copy or something in the transfer/download process.

Greg I had tried it on 3 different downloads and all 3 times it would not shut off. Twice it was downloaded from my Humminbird and once from here. My unit does not like it...lol, To be honest I don't think it added a lot of benefits so it was not a hard decision to revert back. Just wondering if Bruced had recently updated the unit.

I experienced a similar thing today with my new (2 weeks old) 798ci. When I attempted to take a snapshot it put up a message that it couldn't find a writable card and froze. Wouldnt respond to any commands. I had to unplug it to get it back on. Then it did the same thing when I tried to do take another snapshot.
I had two cards in the unit. I removed both and put a third slower card in it and that worked fine the rest of the day. Apparently something happened and it trashed a file on the primary card in the unit. Both cards did play fine in the computer except for one file which was corrupted on that primary card.

What brand, speed and capacity were the two memory cards that would not work?
Have you tried doing a full format on them (NOT a quick format)?

Both San Disk. Primary one 16g class 10 High Speed. One file in this one was unreadable when I returned. I renamed that file BAD.BAD to lock out any possible file location error but did not reformat because of other data on the card. That was the one in use at the time it locked up. Second one was a 4g class 4 standard speed card. It had no information that was important to keep on the card so I reformatted it when I came back in with a full format, no problems and wrote quite a bit of data to it just to check it out. Have used both cards in two different computers, one Windows Vista the other Linux and both work perfectly. Replaced card on the water with a 2 gig PNY Optima standard speed that worked flawlessly for the rest of the day.
Don't think it was a card issue. I think it was some kind of surge, noise, or something that caused the problem. Unit was quite warm to the touch when I unplugged it. I had both cards in the unit at the time and I think that was possibly a mistake as well. Neither was loaded with nav data. I had them both in the unit just so I had a backup available. Third card was in my pocket. That will be my backup storage location in the future!
