I think you need to test the unit on the water.
You won't be able to tell if any of the sonars actually work correctly
while out of the water.

Before you take it out, I would check under you sonar menu that your max depth
setting is at least 10 feet deeper than any depths you will encounter.

Good luck.

I'd be very surprised if you were able to see anything at all while testing any sonar out of water.  Keep in mind the basic principal of sonar is that they are designed to detect reflected sound in water.  Water is many times more dense than air so a sonar designed for use in water just won't work out of the water.  You may be able to hear the sonar "pings" (or feel them if you're touching the transducer), I don't know, I haven't tried that but I wouldn't expect anything to appear on the SI / DI display.

Won't work out of the water. What you can do is play with it in simulation before you go to the water you can make an determine setting an also save the settings you make. Then when you do go to the water you will have a pretty good idea what and how
to set or change etc. Hope this helps Gary

I use the system out of water, the depth moves around,  I believe that Greg has recommended not to do this.

I have done it for the past 2 years without a problem (so far), but when I do it I am setting up menu options for the next trip out.

I have an extra transducer, GPS puck and 110 conversion so that I can play with it in the house.  Many times I am reading instruction on my computer and playing with the system at the same time.  I have found this to be convenient when playing with the mapping programs.
