Title: Best way to test if Fish ID is working?
Post by: Fly 1 on October 26, 2014, 07:55:07 AM
Hi Guys,
Yes I know, find some fish first!  ;)
Due to bad weather, only had some limited tested testing over 3 days
My old 385 ci used to indicate fish symbols with fish,
Cannot get my new 798 ci HD SI to show the fish symbols, even if I turn the sensitivity up?
I had a lure at about 8ft in 20ft of water which I could clearly see but when I switched over to fish ID I though it would show as a fish?
lastly, as I have seen on the forum, a guy used a weighted water bottle filled with air, would this be a good test?

If a lure showed up as a fish, the unit wouldn't be working very well.

The water bottle should work since, as i understand it, sonar detects fish by bouncing the sound wave off the air in their fish bladder.

I tested my unit by turning on fish ID when I ran into a big school of baitfish. I couldn't see any arcs but when fish ID was turned on about a dozen fish showed up.

I've read of successful Fish ID tests using tennis balls ...because of the trapped air inside ...

Tks Rickie
Thats a novel idea,
Might go for 3 items,

Gary, I don’t know what the units look for in the sonar returns before they will display a Fish ID+ Symbol but I know there has been some testing done with ping pong balls before as I remember seeing some posts about it a very long time ago.  Please post back your results.  Don’t forget the Fish ID+ Sensitivity menu that can be adjusted as well  Adjusting the normal Sensitivity menu will not affect if and when the unit uses a Fish ID+ Symbol or not but the Fish ID+ Sensitivity will.

Hi Greg,
I spoke to the Australian Humminbird agent yesterday, they indicated that the ball and bottle test would be a good idea and if I then do not get a "fish" signal,
return the unit to Humminbird,
the other part of the conversation was about the rooster tail, I had fixed temporary with electrical tape and they are kindly sending me the part to stop that,
Lastly, I did ask about whether I needed to switch to 455 Khz using side scan, the agent indicated that I shouldn't have to with the compact transducer missed with the unit, (798 ci HD SI)

Weather did not allow me to get more than 3 short days on the water and is still pretty ordinary, hope to get on the water again in a couple of weeks, or sooner hopefully

I know the international unit (same I have) do not display all the time the fish ID. If you search on this forum y ou may see my oldest post regarding this.

I have done many test (trust me) and compare them to my older unit 565 and saw that even on ice fishing i was not able to see fish on my 798 like I was on my 565 for same spot.

even when doing switch fire when jigging....

hope the new software will fix all that
