Helix 7 SI graph issues
« on: March 05, 2019, 10:49:05 AM »
I have the Helix 7 SI unit. I use the standard compact side imaging transducer. I just recently had the minn Kota Terrova installed on my boat and since then, my down imaging has looked like this. I don’t think this is normal. My wires for the trolling motor are run on one side of the boat and the wires for my units are run on the opposite side. When I drive at 5mph or less it looks like this. When I speed up above 5mph it goes away and then comes back when I slow down. This image was taken with nothing on but the unit. Anyone seen this issue and any suggestions to fix this problem?

If your SI also shows horizontal lines - these echoes can be attributed to something to the side of the xducer causing a hard return  ... (Commonly a jackplate echo)  ...

Can you post a Pic of your SI when this issue is also showing in DI  ...??

I can. I don’t have a pic but I can take one and post it. From what I remember though, the side imaging looked pretty normal except that clutter on the down imaging showed up in the water column on side imaging. I don’t remember seeing any horizontal lines. But also, I don’t remember having this issue until the Terrova was installed. This issue is so apparent because in 10 ft or less, the screen is a solid color of whatever color graph I have chose. So I feel like I would have noticed this problem if it was there before my TM was installed.

Your picture looks like RF noise. You might want to try a installing a RF toroid. Here is a ytube video link.

I tried that the other day. It cleared up the image but when I sped up, my graph jumped and said I was in 53ft of water and I was in 4ft of water. It actually made the issue worse. Humminbird is sending me a choke that wires in series with my on board charger to my cranking battery which is what my units are wired to.

My guess is they are going to send you a power cord with a toroid built in ie. (pc11). Since the RF noise went away with RF toroid in the transducer wiring, I wouldn't expect what they are sending to you to make any difference.

The fact that you depth jumped when you sped up will tell me that the transducer is reading the turbulence under or around the transducer.

Yeah I don’t expect it to help. By speed up, I mean 5mph or greater. So wouldn’t I have turbulence even going slower than 5 mph?
