Confirm Setup Questions - 998 and 788 ethernet
« on: October 19, 2014, 10:17:28 AM »
Good Morning, everyone

I currently have a 998C SI at my console, and I recently just received a 788 CI HD (head unit only with wiring ect).

A couple basic questions (I hope):

a.  with a Ethernet cable and adapter (AS EC QDE and AS EC 20E), will I be "good to go" running both units together with the 998 being the main unit?

b.  without a gps receiver for the 788 unit, will my 788 unit draw it's signal from the 998 thru the Ethernet cable feed?

c.  and I am I correct in saying that I will still need to insert a mapping card in the 788 to see my waters?  I understand that only the main 998 will record waypoints but the 788 will read them.

Hope you guys can clarify for me.

Thanks

Pepe

a. You are correct ...

b. The "I" in 788 C"I" HD stands for internal GPS antenna ...

c. The 788 has built in base maps but mostly just lake outlines ... You will need a map card for more details ...Navionics and Lakemaster work in the HB units ...

The units creates waypoints by the GPS antenna positon on the Earth (not by the xducer position on the Earth)... Because the 998 will have a connected external GPS antenna ...and the 788ci HD will have a functioning internal GPS antenna...each unit will be able to create waypoints from its own specific GPS antenna position on the Earth ...

Waypoints will only "reside" in the unit memory that the waypoint was created on ...

The Ethernet connection will allow each unit to "see" (and display in a different color)...the other unit's created waypoints ... Both units have to be powered on and "Waypoint sharing" enabled in the Networking menu for each unit to "see" the other unit's waypoints ...

If 1 unit is powered off ... The remaining powered on unit will only display the waypoints that were physically created on that unit ...

Thanks, Rickie

Excellent - so, just to clarify:  if I have my Navionics Platinum Plus in my main console unit (998), will the bow unit (788) read this chip, or must I still insert a chip in the bow unit as well?

Thanks

Only the ONIX and ION can share map data...

Your units will need separate map cards ...

Just to clarify ... The units will create waypoints without a map card .. And you can maneuver the boat back to those waypoints by watching the boat icon on the chart view ... There just will not be be any contour features or navigation icons showing on the chart view ...

Mapping cards will overlay the contour features and navigation icons over the built in bland base map ...
