Title: Open Seabed - Seabed Mapping Project
Post by: fgcity on October 21, 2014, 06:03:27 PM
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to introduce a small project i am working on in my free time. I always loved the sea and especially the seabed, which is mostly unexplored. So i decided to slowly, do my small part and explore as much of it as i can through the experience and technology i shall be building my self, under a mere mortal budget, since anything related to underwater mapping out there has astronomical pricing.

The plan naturally is ambitious but it might as well be since it's just a personal idea and, well its better than no plan at all :)

Have been working with UAV's and in general with System design for most of my life and have always had this idea at the back of my head.

I opened up a small Facebook page and am working on it whenever i have some free time, but never the less wanted to let everyone know about the idea and perhaps someone will like it and join the project.

For the Facebook link click here (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Open-Seabed/799683796745552)

Naturally i won't be able to map the entire world with my small kayak and Humminbird but hopefully, through some automation i shall at least be able to map some of it and collect the data on the web, publicly available for everyone. Perhaps others will join and find this project as a useful place to have all the data organized since i imagine, sensor data and in general any sea recordings will be useful to many organizations if it is available.

For now i already have a domain for this and started a Facebook page to keep things organized. Feel free to check it out and like it if you.... like it :)

Just wanted to update everyone. The first Scan was done today. Nothing fancy but still.

Check it out on the website: www.openseabed.com (http://www.openseabed.com)

I erge everyone who has a Side Imaging sonar to post their own scan recordings on the site, send it through E-mail or post it in the blog. Hope this becomes a unified effort.

Feel free to post your thoughts in the Forum (http://www.openseabed.com/index.php/openseabed-forum) as well as Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Open-Seabed/799683796745552).
