Inboard Instalation
« on: March 29, 2010, 02:59:53 PM »
I just installed my new 798 on my Penn Yan tunnel drive inboard. The transducer is behind the prop (see pic). Will this cause any interference?

I took the boat out for a test drive today. The side imaging doesn't seem to be working. Here is a snapshot of crab traps. I don't see anything.

you are probably getting interferrence with the prop wash.  with the tunnel drive it may be a bit hard to get clean water (no bubbles).  You might try mounting out to the starboard a bit more.  The transducer needs to be in clean water.  Chuck

Hello Salvor and welcome to the forum!

First you need to lower the side range in your settings and slow down while scanning.
The side range should be around 2-3 times the water depth your in. This is the best compromise concerning details on the screen versus area covered.

You get good side images if your boat speed is not faster than 6 mph.
Your graph speed must be in relation to your boat speed to avoid "stretched" or "shrunken" pictures. I wrote something about this here:

Concerning your set up:

Your hull is quite a challenge. I would suggest either a dual SI transducer set up or a telescope mount with a single Si transducer. Here's how I built my telescope:

I think you can avoid the prop wash if you would go deep enough beyond your propeller.

Hope this helps

Not so difficult, you need a tru hull transducer (or 2)

Thanks for all the advice. A telescope mount will not work since the 20' transducer cable is JUST barely long enough. I already ordered a XPTH-9-HDSI-180-T thru-hull transducer.

Hey Pete!  Welcome to the forum!  You will definitely get better results with a dual transducer setup.  Two thru hulls would be ideal!

Great to hear from you and hope you find lots of treasure this year!  Hows John doing?  I saw he got a new knee!

What do you mean "two thru-hulls?" How would I connect them together? John gets his knee surgery in April.

You can use two transducers with a Y cable and it would pull the Left SI from the left transducer and the right SI from the right transducer.  You would need to buy the AS SILR Y Splitter Cable.

Side Imaging Splitter Cable

Y Cable - Separates Side Imaging into Left and Right Beams - for Side Imaging products only. Allows the use of two side imaging transducers with one unit without the need for a transducer switch. Used in applications where the a plastic thru the hull transducer is required on a boat with a deep V hull. Can also be used if the motor or other items on the exterior of the boat may block one side of the transducer and distort readings.
