Title: 898si GPS stopped working
Post by: rnormanr on November 15, 2014, 04:21:56 PM
I was headed out on a black fishing trip and I noticed the gps said no antenna attached.  I checked it out and everything was hooked up  correctly.  I rebooted the unit and it would not even go to a gps screen.  The sounder and side image works fine.  Any ideas on what I can do?  P.S I don't have anything saved on a card.

Chart views will not be available when the unit cannot recognize a GPS antenna ...

GPS not connected issues are sometimes the very first signs of not enough ample power supply to the unit ... (If the puck itself is not going bad)...

If you have wiggled the cable where in enters the head unit and cannot get the unit to recognize the puck...check wiring for corrosion ... Including fuse and fuse holder ...

Load test the battery ...

If all that checks out ... Cross testing another head unit on your GPS antenna is the best way to narrow the problem down ...

A number of things affect GPS pucks. As pointed out connections are a prime example for problems. The mateing of the female and male pieces do not match with enough friction force to keep a solid and error free signal path. Keeping them clean and tight should help somewhat. Periodic inspection and retightening might help. Also signal blockage is sensitive to gps puck placement. I have even seen a film of "stuff" on the puck in which a cleaning helps. Check the cable for any pinches or scratches.

Thanks guys I will try those things.  I have a friend with the same unit as mine and I will try putting his on this weekend to see If it is my connection or the machine.  I will try cleaning the puck which  I haven't done yet.  As for the connection, the pins are clean and shinny and the power has been ample since I have installed it on this new boat last April.  I will check the connections under the dash however.
heres hoping
