Title: What size battery needed for 150 motor and electronics

Currently having problem with onix unit shutting down when engine is started, bought boat used and has a marine dual purpose battery rated at 625 cranking amps and 120 reserve capacity minutes. Looks like bigger battery would fit in compartment. What size battery should I use. Thanks.

I don't know about the battery Jim but part of the issue could be in the wire gauge sized used to go from the cranking battery to the power cable for the ONIX unit or even in the connections between the power cable and the battery.  Anything loose, corroded or even of a small wire gauge size (relative to the length of the wires) will restrict the amount of power that flows to the ONIX unit.  So i would look at possibly running new wires for the ONIX (with a new fuse and fuse holder) as well as replacing the battery.
How far do you have to extend the power cable for the ONIX so that it reaches the battery?

Just ordered 10/2 wire from west marine to go from battery to accy switch breaker, extended front Onix wires about 8 feet and nothing on console unit. I question the bigger the battery the better, it's just money. Thanks

Jimmy,
I would suggest hooking your sonar to a completely separate battery.
It can be a small battery.  Under power, you could get sonar interference from the main motors alternator.  Also, keep the sonar wires away from other wires and electrical devices.

ITGEEK, so if I hook my sonar (Model 899) up to a separate battery, since it's not being charged throughout the day by the main motor, I'm guessing that the draw is so low, that it will last all day? And, I would just charge the sonar's battery after a day of fishing like my trolling motor batteries?

There's no more room in my bilge area for another battery, but I think I have room under my console to put a battery.
