997 GPS not connected
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:35:21 PM »
I've got an issues with my 997 losing its gps connection.

Boat Overview: Boat: 2008 1850 Crestliner Fish Hawk.  Bow mounted 787c2 connected to interlink with Console mounted 997c.  Console mounted 787c2 connected to separte gps and transducer.  All fishfinders and motors (mercury optimax 150 and honda 9.9 power thrust) are connected to same battery.

When i launch the boat, I first start the motor and then connect all fish finders and power them on.  All fishfinders connect to gps and transducers just fine.  When I cruise to my spots all fish finders work just fine.  When I stop and fish my spots, after a few minutes my 997 begins to flake out and looses gps connection.  When i'm on the gps view, it just says "GPS not connected".  The 787c2 that is on the same interlink GPS connection as the 997 stay connected to the GPS just fine.  If I powerdown both units and start the motor, let it run for a minute, and then power them both back on, the gps connects again.  It seems to me that I have some kind of voltage issue.  If I remember right, when the motor is running the voltage on the 997 is around 12.9 to 13.1.  When the motor is off and the 997 looses connection to the gps, the voltage is down in the 11's.  My 150 mercury optimax cranks over just fine on this battery and my 787c2's stay powered up just fine.  I have never seen a low power message on any of my fish finders.  My first question is what voltage does the 997 need to run properly?  I am looking for any suggestion on what to try to fix this issue.  One thing that I am thinking of trying is cleaning my connections.

Having everything hooked to one battery is going to cause you
a few of problems.  Interference, being at the very top of the list.
Best scenario, get a separate battery for your fish finders.
Do not hook anything but the fish finders to that battery.

All you can do is the basics:
Fully charge and load test your battery.
Just because it shows over 12 volts, just means that it is fully charged.
The battery could still be bad.
I think most 12 volt devices need at least 10.5 volts to operate correctly.
Check your power connections and fuse.
  Check GPS cord and connection.

You may want to check that you have the newest software running on both your
units.
Are your gps puck(s) staying where they have a clear view of the sky when you
stop and fish?
You say when you stop and fish your spots.  Do you have a gas motor running when you
fish your spots?  Interference could possibly be affecting the GPS.
Also,  a VHF radio could cause problems.
