SDHC Card Size for 998C SI
« on: February 15, 2012, 09:44:44 PM »
I know that there are other threads talking about SD Card sizes but I haven't seen anything recent covering the newest cards.  I have just got my unit and I want to pick up a couple of cards.  I am looking at 8, 16 and 32Gig SDHC I cards and am wondering what is overkill or not.  I have seen recommendations about keeping the recording length shorter for review later.  But say as a hypothetical situation I go and record for 8 hours straight (not that I will do it) what will I need for a card?  I hope that is clear as mud. ;D

Welcome to the forum.Starting out I would keep my recording times around 15 min. You could start with
maybe  2 Sand Disk 2 gig cards. And one 8 gig card. I like the smaller cards. Gary

I use a 4 GB SDHC Sandisk Ultra III, like Stillbear I keep my recording times low to less then 30 minutes.  When the recordings are large they are difficult to find specific points of interest.  I use Humviewer to look at the recordings on my computer and can scroll through them pretty quick.

Also I have 2 SDHC chips which I trade out each trip and I have a 1 GB chip (smallest I could find locally) which I use for updating the software on my unit.

I keep 5 SD cards with my unit at all times...

1 with current version of software..
1 with previous version of software...
1 with all backed up waypoint data...
1 with saved recordings and snapshots of previous trips...
1 blank for today's recordings and snapshots...

I use the Sandisk Extreme III 20mbps ....

SD cards are cheap compared to the aggrivation of "not" having the above cards on the water ... And needing them to keep fishing...

SD cards for just saving software versions do not have to be as big (Gb)...

Thanks for the quick responses.  I think I will get a couple 4gig SDHC cards and I already have 2 2gig SD cards from my old camera I can use for updates and such.  I have already installed Humviewer.
Cheers ;D
