360 imaging accessory problems
« on: February 09, 2013, 06:19:02 PM »
Well I took it out today and the very first thing it says is not deployed to setting please retract  and redeploy , now I played with this thing in my shop for 2weeks and never seen this. I did this all day long sometimes it was ok and most of the time I had to just go back to the unit and deploy it. I got back home and messed with it until I was feed up. Wish I hadn't ever bought it I ran it up and down 20 times with the buttons on unit no problems. Went back to 1198 and its would deploy 1 time out of 10. To my setting. My battery voltage according to 1198 and volt meter was 12.8 volts. There is no restrictions I can run it with the buttons on unit no problems, anyone want to buy a 360 unit?

Don't worry you're not the only one.  Been out with mine two times and this is what happened:

Retracting and deploying message like yours.  Only happens on the water.

Message saying that 360 source has been lost.

After retracting 360 and trying to switch to regular SI, unit would kick out of that and go into Bird's Eye view.  I would hit the view button to put it back on SI, kick out again and again.

Now DI has white dots and lines like interference yet the SI looks fine.  Thought the DI came from the SI signal.

Seems like there is some interference in front of the boat icon, might be the hull.  Thought it was the trolling motor so pulled it up but still there.  Only problem is the 360 is already in the water while the boat is sitting and while on plane I can see it spraying some.

Sent email to Humminbird with pics and notes.

Hi Diel, I think the DI issue is related to the 6.6 update. I get it when Sharpness is set to Low.

Thanks brother, I saw your post on BBC.  I think you're correct on that, my setting is on low at the moment.  Funny how it just started in the middle of the day on the water.  All of a sudden the thing went nuts and it looked like interference.

Thanks for the help again.

Ok had a chance to checkout my problem some more! When i have the inboard chargers hook up and the 1198c is reading a voltage of 14.2 or higher it deploys and retracks everytime, when i unplug the charger and the voltage drops below 14.0 volts it will error on deployment just about every time. measured the volts on battery with volt meter also and 1198 is reading voltage correct. ( GREG HELP)

And you wired the 360 directly to a battery correct?  I'm about to hit the water so we'll see if I can work on it also.  Thanks for the update.

Mine did a couple of new things today on the water:

1.  Didn't give me the bad deployment message but when I looked at the 360 it had only gone down about 1 foot.

2.  Retracted it all the way, looked at it and it was ok, get going and the alarm goes off telling me it's deployed even though I can see it's not.

3.  Gave me the same message about 360 source lost.

4.  Sounded super anemic when deploying, almost like it was about to jam up.

Will contact Humminbird tomorrow to see what they think.

Yep, they emailed me the same.  I just registered the unit and there it was.  So on my way to the shop to see what happens.  Try to register your unit before closing time at Humminbird, mine wouldn't register so I had to call them to do it for me.

Fired up the 1198 and waited for the 360 to be recognized.  Restored all defaults and inserted the SD card....nothing.  Waited 5 minutes, nothing.   No confirmation that it was updating, etc.  So I called Humminbird again and the lady tells me that this update is included in the 6.6 update.  I already have the 6.6 update on the 1198 so supposedly everything is updated properly.  Took the boat out and the 360 is still doing the same thing.  Doesn't know when it's deployed or retracted, and it keeps thinking it has not deployed or retracted fully.

Yep, they are all over the place man.  That "update" in my account is the initial software release, not new stuff.

I have the same version but it says initial software release.  Not really an update for what I understand.  It's also included in the 6.6 according to the lady I spoke with.  Sent email to customer service "trainer" Deborah Benson.  We'll see what happens.

I talked to there tech again and you are right they told me there hasn't been a update for the 360 and that the 1.080 is the original version. She couldn't come up with a solution for the problem and they would call me tomorrow, you know this is getting old. My unit is like yours acts as if its in a strain on the way down, comes back up a lot faster.

Got this from Ms. Benson,

"We need to get you to confirm that both units are running 6.60 software and that the pod software is 1.080.  You can find the pod software version on the system status screen on the unit.

The repeated warning message is because the control head is still subscribed to the old 360 pod. You will need to go into the network setup tab and subscribe from the old pod to the new pod.

It also appears that you are picking up some trolling motor noise as well, with the images that you presented.

I had a 360 that didn't work so they replaced it.  Sounds like they think the new one is bumping heads with the old one.

Going to my shop to check what she asked and we'll see what happens.

Message sent to her Supervisor!

With the 360 Imaging being so new not all of our CRC Reps are up to speed on it yet.  They conduct product training classes on old and new products but sometimes there is no replacing hands-on (or phones-on) experience in troubleshooting.

Second 360 has bit the dust!!  Was out today and it worked for 15 minutes, then got the message that  the 360 sonar source was out.  Could not deploy it by the top buttons or the control head.  Rebooted the unit, ethernet switch and finally turned the complete system off at the battery switch and tried it again.  No luck.  Then I tried to disconnect the power off at the pod and reconnect it, no luck.  So gave up on it and kept fishing.

Here's the scary part.  Like they tell you on the instructions, if the pod has no power, it will creep down.  Well I didn't realize this until I was heading to the ramp and I noticed that the boat would pull to one side.  Stopped the boat and looked and yep, the pod was about 1.5 feet down.  So I'm on the water, boat moving around all over the place and I have to try to lift the freaking thing by hand so I can put the cover on it.  Yep, left the cover in the truck so had to use duct tape to hold my $2000 piece of equipment up.

Got the boat to the shop and the first thing I did was test to see if I had 12v to the power cord and guess what, I do.  So everything to the power cord is good, the unit is doing the same thing the first one did, just dead.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the power is wired to a cranking battery, through a battery switch and a 7.5A fuse (which is good).  My battery is almost all the way to be back of the boat so I only added about 2 feet of wire, both connections were soldered and heat shrunk.

I think I will wait a year or so before deciding if the 360 unit is  worth it.

Have not seen anything that makes me want to purchase one.

I know it takes a bit to work out issues, but I do not remember anyone stating how great it is.

Can not imagine the Pros wanting to use it with all of the issues.

I'll stick with my SI transducers for now, still love them.

Got the replacement today but was already out on the water when it arrived so no install.  One thing that needs to be said is Humminbird customer service is the best I have ever encountered.  I called them and they sent me a fedex label to ship mine to them.  I was expecting them to just repair the one I had but about 4 hrs later Ms. Benson calls me and tells me they are shipping me a new unit that was tested on the water!  They wanted to make sure everything was working properly.

I received it and they included a new power cable that was extended 3 feet and has a fuse installed.  I am completely impressed and looking forward to testing it tomorrow.

Are you using a bracket or installing directly to the transom?

I would make sure you know what the angle of the boat is while is moving so you can level the unit to that, instead to just leveling the boat on the trailer.  I took my boat out and tested it at 3,4,5,6 mph with a level and made note of that.  I usually look around at 3-5mph.  Then when I got to the shop I lowered the front of the trailer until I saw the bubble at the same spot.

I have taken pics at 4mph that look like I am sitting still, very clear.

Instructions say to use a 8A fuse, couldn't find one, use a 7.5A.  Even Humminbird sent me a fuse today and it's a 7.5A.

Make sure you use the anti seize for all bolts and nuts, if not you will have some problems.

Some people had commented about how the unit fits loosely on the channel, but I didn't have that problem.  There's a bit of play but it doesn't make any noise or mess up the sonar.

You will have to add wire to the power cable, it's only 6ft long and about 4 of those feet are used to route the cable from the top of the pod unit to inside of the boat.

When you put the ethernet cable on the channel, and the power cable on the other side, they will not want to stay there.  I used plastic cable wrap (Lowe's or Home Depot have it) and once I put the cables in their channels, I put the wrap in between them.  Looks nice and keeps the cables in place.

Initial settings I am using:  Sensitivity 12, Standard speed, Sharpness Low.

Thanks Guys! I will post when I have it installed. Just a note to anyone looking at buying this unit. I called Humminbird and asked about the mounting brackets. The rep told me that everything in the "Humminbird Install" video was included. She was watching the video when I asked. And, I asked her about the Mounting Brackets again and she told me they were included. Those Brackets are NOT included. You have to buy them separately...People are People and we are one of them:)

If you have a flat transom and you don't mind putting holes in your boat, then everything is included.  I bought a sandwich bracket that goes between the motor and transom.  Really happy with that decision as I didn't want to drill into the transom.  It's a $250 bracket but considering you're into the unit $2000, not a big deal.

I've got mind set on 85 the error it would change the setting to 75 and if it error enough it would only deploy 2%. The second unit i got works fine in the shop no errors haven't gotton on water yet but will this weekin

Took mine out today and it worked all day long.  Couple of things I changed on mine.  I am running the 1198 and the 360 off my back up battery with nothing else there.  I also bought batteries with more capacity, as they told me if you have a big motor and you try to start it late in the day when the battery is not at full charge it could throw off the 360.  I had no problems with the deploy or retract today, no messages.  One thing I noticed is water will creep up the cable channels sometimes if you're going fast enough and the pod hits the water.

The unit sounds completely different now when it deploys, not binding or anything like that.  Taking the boat out again tomorrow, hope it still works.

Ok took mind second new unit out today fished all day long no problems whatsoever, worked every time. I do have to get use to reading it and finding fish on it, it's just different than the si or di. I did have one problem when I was running the 306 sonar on one unit and si or di on the other unit I would have interference.

I must be cursed or something.  Yesterday mine worked with no problems, today after the 2nd hour it would not retract.  Once again I cannot trust the deploy/retract messages.  I took pics of the 1198 telling me it was retracted, but lucky for me (as I don't trust it anymore) I checked it and it was all the way down.  It would not come up no matter what I did.  I tried rebooting the 1198, removed the 360 power cable and counted to 10, then tried again.  I cut the power to the entire boat, then started all over again.  Finally I got my boat hook and pulled the pod up.  Put the cap on it and turned it off.  About 3 hrs later I tried again, it deployed just fine, but again would not retract.  Almost sounded like it was binding up again.  Pulled it up manually again, and turned the piece of crap off.

Got the boat out of the water later, got it to my workshop and decided to try it again.  This time everything worked fine but the deploy depth had gone from 100 to 8.  Huh?

On this pic you should be able to see the top of the pod, you can't because it's still deployed.  This pic was taken right after the above one.

I have just mounted my 360 unit today. I am curious as to why there is so much 'Play' in the mount. It is sort of loose between the deployment unit and the mounting bracket that it comes with. Have you Guys experienced the same thing? If so have you addressed the issue or just left it alone?

All 3 of mine have done that.  Doesn't seem to cause any problems, been all the way up to 63mph on mine and it was fine.

I have an 'Issue' with Vibration :) I don't like things rattling around. I am wondering about the life span of a device that is constantly rattling around.?.? Also about the degrees of variance created by the movement when deployed? Too anal ? ;)

I tighten mind up until there is no play and no rattle, just make sure to use anti sieze on the stainless bolts for they will sieze up with out it.

frankadamson, i no your saying about that little wobble. i didnt like that either,i was concerned about over time that little wobble becoming a big wobble. this is what i did.i used heat shrink on the bolts.the best way that i found to use it is to lay everything down on a table ,apply something slick and slowly screw the bolts inplace using 1/4" ratchet.( DO NOT USE DEEPWELL SOCKET) if you do use a deepwell  you'll find out why i said not to. when you get it all together  mount it on your bracket no more wobble.

I just purchased the 360 at the Bass Pro Shop in Baton Rouge La.  Made the decision to let them do the unit install.  The unit should should be ready for pickup this week - and I will keep you guys posted on any issues that I have.  One thing I am doing a little different is that I purchased a Talon shallow water anchor and the bracket for the 360 to mount with it.  Hopefully that was tested before they rolled it out to the public.

The guys from Humminbird got here this morning at around 8:45-9am and immediately started working on the old unit.  Lucky for me it was doing the same thing so they got to see it acting up.  The new unit arrived right around 10:30 so we got it installed and tested out of the water, went to lunch then hit the water.  They ran that unit through all kinds of testing using the 1198 and then the 998...no problems at all!!  No messages or problems with the deploy/retract.

I am super impressed with the way Humminbird has dealt with these problems.  Even if something happens later on, I'm very confident they will handle it no problem.  The guys answered all my questions and even checked other things like the mounting of the HDSI transducer.  At the end of the day all this stuff is man made so things will happen, but it's what they did to make it right that matters to me.

Really big thanks to J.P., Richard Kaiser and Ms. Deborah Benson.  I will be back on the water tomorrow fishing with it.  Will update with pics.

Both J.P. and Richard came out, we're going fishing tomorrow morning.

They told me the last unit I sent in arrived not working but they did a couple of things to it and now can't get it to freak out again.  Then this one was doing stuff that it wasn't supposed to be doing (telling you it had retracted when it hadn't).  Nash, they are using yours to test software as it consistently kept failing.

These guys are cool cats for sure, they answered all my questions.
