Topic: SI actual view width with range setting

On any of the XX97/8 units, when the SI range is set to say 100 ft, is the display showing 100ft each channel (200 ft total) or 100 ft total width, both channels? It would seem that it would be per channel since the range is displayed at top right and left but, I have been noticing that targets seem to be half the distance from the boat (like a vertical seawall) that I would expect. This tells me that the display range setting is both sides, not each. Just making sure.

The HDSI is a two element for SI...one for the left and one for the right. (although there are other elements in the array for other beams)  The distance is for each element but is only set to include both.  Therefore 100 feet is 100 for each.  That is to say 100 feet left of the centerline of the boat both directions..
For display purposes, if you know the items is on one side of the boat you can set the distance to 1/2 of the normal side to side and select only that left or right channel for desplay......

If the unit range is set to 100 feet, the total swath width (both channels) is 200 feet -correct?

Yes, if the width is set to 100 then you will see 100 left and 100 right.  If you select just the left it will be 100....In my reply I was saying that if you use the single channel only (left only) then you can cut your width down and see a larger target on the single channel display. As long as it is in the distance setting..
I stay confused with this sonar stuff......

As I understand it, the range lines show the distance from the transducer.  The horizontal distance an object is from the side of the boat is a function of the angle of the beam and the depth of the water.  The horizontal distance from the boat is a little less.

In shallow water, an object will appear closer to the actual distance than in deeper water.

Kind of like.  The algothrim used by HB takes into consideration the angle of the dangle. Howerve it is not accurate to the foot.
Gets you close butr not actually all the time directly on target.

I could be wrong, but when I set my 1197 to 75 feet and record the readings, I can then take the recording on my computer and reset the width to 125 feet I get to see 125 feet. 

I think that the system records everything but shows what you program it to see.

Interesting point George.  I will check this out.  For SAR this might be worth knowing.
With a larger computer screen the target outside of the HB screen display might be visible.
